The U.S. State Department has issued a worldwide travel alert Friday, citing potential threat of terrorist attacks by al Qaeda:

August 2, 2013

The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the continued potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula.  Current information suggests that al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August.  This Travel Alert expires on August 31, 2013.

Terrorists may elect to use a variety of means and weapons and target both official and private interests. U.S. citizens are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure.  Terrorists have targeted and attacked subway and rail systems, as well as aviation and maritime services.  U.S. citizens should take every precaution to be aware of their surroundings and to adopt appropriate safety measures to protect themselves when traveling.

We continue to work closely with other nations on the threat from international terrorism, including from al-Qa’ida.  Information is routinely shared between the U.S. and our key partners in order to disrupt terrorist plotting, identify and take action against potential operatives, and strengthen our defenses against potential threats.

We recommend U.S. citizens register their travel plans with the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy through the State Department’s travel registration website.  We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens Traveling abroad enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  STEP enrollment  gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency.  If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

GOP Attacks on Obama for Politicizing Osama Bin Laden Assassination Only Helps Him, Remember 9/11?

GOP ATTACKS ON OBAMA:  I am amazed at how quickly Republicans forgot how the Bush 2004 reelection campaign blanketed the airwaves with the events of 9/11, so much so that people were literally hoodwinked into voting for George W. Bush. They saw nothing wrong with that tactic but now that President Obama is milking the Osama bin Laden assassination, they are screaming “off with his head.” Politics is just a dirty game and voters like you and I are used as pawns.

While I found the campaign video playing up the Osama bin Laden assassination somewhat distasteful, it is nonetheless politics and if the shoe were on the other foot, the Republicans would do the same as they did in 2004. GOP attacks on Obama will only help him at the polls and continue to prove that Mitt Romney is like a deer caught between two headlights on foreign policy. A little like his dog Seamus on the top of the family station wagon with all that wind smacking him in the face.

Mark McKinnon: “Just as it would have been absurd for the Bush campaign not to mention 9/11 in our 2004 reelection launch. In fact, all we did in our ads was say we faced some unexpected challenges and showed some images of 9/11. And we were crucified by the Democrats… And now, how dare Obama exploit OBL for political purposes, say Republicans today.”

“When Democrats went crazy about our 9/11 ad in 2004, all they did was bring more attention to the message we were trying to communicate. Which is precisely the trap Republicans are falling into today.”

Right Wing Hypocrisy: Donald Rumsfeld Hits Obama on Politicizing Osama Bin Laden Assassination

Former defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld hits Obama on “politicizing” Osama Bin Laden assassination. Um, this would make sense if he were a far more credible person to speak on the subject. The Drudge Report is running with this as though Donald Rumsfeld is such an authority on what’s right and wrong in the U.S. military. Look at his record and why he had to run from his cabinet position. Er, did he forget his boss’ “Mission Accomplished” stunt on the U.S. carrier?

Here are some tweets in response to Rumsfeld:

Obama Campaign Releases Trailer For First Term Documentary Narrated by Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks narrates the first term documentary for the Obama Campaign, which was directed by Oscar Award winner Davis Guggenheim.  The film talks about a variety of “accomplishments,” including killing Osama bin Laden.

The Republican National Committee gave its two cents:

“The American people don’t need a movie trailer or a 17 minute documentary to know what the president accomplished over the past three years. Unfortunately Americans feel Obama’s accomplishments each and every day after President Obama led our country to higher unemployment, record debt, and higher gas prices. The question is what does another Obama term mean for America? From the promise of fewer jobs, tax increases, more debt, and the implementation of Obamacare, we literally cannot afford another four years of President Obama.” – RNC spokesperson Kirsten Kukowski

NEWSFLASH:  President Obama has presided over another daring mission, in the same vein as the mission that took down 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. The same elite forces that killed that dirtbag, parachuted into Somalia and rescued American Jessica Buchanan, 32, of  Rosslyn, Vir., and Poul Hagen Thisted, 60, of Denmark, who were being held captive by Somalian pirates. The two were kidnapped from Galkayo in Galmudug, Somalia, last year.

Nine Somali pirates were killed and five captured during a brutal gun battle after the mission at 2am on Wednesday to save the two hostages, by the same Navy SEALs unit that killed Bin Laden.

‘This is yet another message to the world that the United States of America will stand strongly against any threats to our people,’ U.S. President Barack Obama said. Source

This is the same president Republicans are calling weak. Seems to me his predecessor was all talk and no action.

DNC Rips Mitt Romney in New Video for Saying Any President Would Have Ordered Hit on Bin Laden

The DNC rips Mitt Romney in a new video for saying any president would have ordered the mission to kill Osama bin Laden.  Really, Mitt, any president? Seems to me George W. Bush had him in his crosshairs in Tora Bora, but didn’t bother. So why hate on Barack Obama for taking him out? Wait, this is coming from the same Mitt Romney, who criticized then candidate Barack Obama in 2008 for saying he would go into Pakistan to get Osama Bin Laden. Um, memory problems Mitt?

Radical, Racist Signs Featured At 9/12 March, Will This March Go Down in History?

I am all for people demonstrating in an orderly way to have their voices heard, but when it borders on radicalism and racism, it becomes a move to embolden the extremists in our midst to act. I was appalled to see some of the signs held by some demonstrators, a predominantly white crowd, at yesterday’s 9/12 March in Washington D.C. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) embraced the crowds by saying he was “glad they’re here to take back their country.” He said that the attendees were nonpartisan, adding that “it’s not about President Obama. It’s not about the Democrats.” Wow, really Senator DeMint?

ThinkProgress sent some members to march and the signs carried by these so-called protesters were hardly nonpartisan. Many were downright racist, radical portrayals of Obama, despite DeMint’s claim. Here are some examples of what ThinkProgess saw:

signcomp1 signcomp2

The signs comparing the President Obama to being a communist didn’t rile me the way the signs associating him with Osama bin Laden did. What is upsetting is that this movement of radicals are entangling themselves in the tragedy of 9/11 is what makes this so sickening.September 11, 2001 was the darkest day in American history, but also a day when we must take pride in the heroism of the day, when many gave their lives to save others. That’s why it is repugnant and disrespectful that the tone the 9/12 march took on. Of course, there are many who marched to have their voices heard, but there was an extremist faction that sought to re-appropriate this national tragedy to divide Americans, not to unite us. They claim this was to protest the health care reform, then why hold this event in the aftermath of 9/11? Sorry, but many of these protesters are extensions of the “sore loser” rallies we saw at earlier tea parties and they are 110% partisan.

What is equally sinister and downright disrespectful is the person who wore a t-shirt with “Mississippi Freedom Rider” on the front. That’s a slap to the civil rights movement, when blacks were being killed for no other reason but the color of their skin. That was another dark period in American history. Sorry, but the real freedom riders were civil rights activists who rode buses into the segregated South in the 1960s, knowing that they could be beaten and killed.

This march was nothing more than a shoutfest, with a bunch of misguided people who believe that they made history. They believe that their partisan revolution has begun, in which they will chase the Democrats from Congress and have President Obama whimpering in retreat and high-tail it out of Washington D.C. Sorry. If they fail, and I believe they will, they will be no more memorable than the crowds that rallied against the New Deal reforms.

Let me end on a portion of an article Paul Begala wrote for the Huffington Post: There was not, to my knowledge, a sign that said, “Let’s Bury Medicare,” even though Medicare is precisely the sort of single-payer, government-run, socialized health insurance the whack-jobs say they hate. Nor did I hear about a sign that said, “Let’s Bury Tricare,” although the military health system is as socialized as Britain’s, its beneficiaries (including, according to Newsweek, Congress clown Joe Wilson of South Carolina) are very happy with their socialized health care. Nary a sign, so far as I know, decried the Bush prescription drug entitlement, even though it ballooned the deficit, enriched the pharmaceutical companies and furthered the supposed slide toward socialism. Nor, I’m told, were there any signs criticizing the $2 trillion Mr. Bush’s unjust, unwarranted, unwise war in Iraq will cost our children and grandchildren. Nor ever a single sign about the Bush tax cuts, which helped squander the Clinton surplus. If this were about fiscal policy, the protests would have happened long ago.
