(HinterlandEditorial) — Karen Handel is in the news again. You will recall she was a gubernatorial candidate in 2010 and lost to Nathan Deal. She also resigned abruptly from the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure after an uproar involving Planned Parenthood. Yep, she almost wrecked the organization. We have written about Karen Handel in the past and still hold the same opinion — she is not a credible candidate for anything, much less to best represent the LGBT, black and Hispanic communities. Karen Handel is another self-righteous Republican hypocrite who placed so little value on education that she didn’t bother to get a college degree. Yeah, Karen Handel is Georgia’s Sarah Palin — zero qualifications and a lot of hubris.

Roll Call: “Handel is the fourth Republican to enter the race for the seat of retiring GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss. Notably, she is also the first woman and first candidate who is not a member of Congress. GOP Reps. Paul Broun, Phil Gingrey and Jack Kingston are running. David Perdue, the cousin of former Gov. Sonny Perdue, announced an exploratory committee this week.”

Karen Handel was the main force behind the organization’s move to change the criteria that had a direct impact on Planned Parenthood. Once again, she would rather feign ignorance than accept her role in this mess. Karen Handel is no stranger to the cut-and-run mentality. She threw the former head of the Log Cabin Republicans, a group of gay and lesbian GOP voters, under a bus, when she claimed she didn’t support same-sex domestic partnerships, though there were a number of emails indicating she supported granting such benefits.

Karen Handel also implemented the Georgia’s photo ID law, which requires Georgian voters to show state-issued photo identification before casting their vote in person.  The voter ID program sparked controversy and many in the black community said it worked against them and was a way to deter blacks from voting. The law was challenged as unconstitutional, but was eventually upheld by the Supreme Court. Karen Handel is a HYPOCRITE in all caps. Plain and simple. Source

After Karen Handel’s abrupt departure from Susan G. Komen, she wrote a book — “Planned Bullywood” — slamming Planned Parenthood and painting the organization as “a bunch of schoolyard thugs.” Who better would know about schoolyard thugs than someone who barely finished high school. She claimed she had nothing to do with the funding being reduced to Planned Parenthood, but during a speech to the Family Research Council last December, Handel implied that her battle with the the family planning organization was far from over. She said, “Planned Parenthood counted on conservative elected officials to be quiet, and they were silent, but they didn’t count on me. Cecile Richards has absolutely no idea who she’s picked a fight with, folks.”

I will boldly predict that if Karen Handel manages to win the GOP nomination, she will go on to lose the election and the Democrats will pick up a seat. As a woman, I am always very supportive of women running for higher office, but this hypocrite isn’t worth anyone’s vote. She has zero credibility and is very divisive.  I must also remind the black community in Atlanta that she was instrumental is getting rid of the nation’s first black female sheriff, Jackie Barrett, on corruption charges.  Sarah Palin endorsed her in 2010 and it’s ironic that they both have the sickening quality of never completing what they start. Nathan Deal slammed Handel on not finishing her term as Secretary of State. As soon as Karen Handel sets up a campaign office we will be calling for an interview. I guess the theatrics will be coming soon. Break out the popcorn.

CHUCK HAGEL NOMINATION:  Now that President Obama has “picked a fight with the Republicans” and some Democrats, I might add, by nominating Chuck Hagel as his pick for Defense Secretary, it’s about to get ugly. The critics are going to pull a Susan Rice on Chuck Hagel, who has ticked off the gay community, pro-Israel groups and some lawmakers who were upset over his position on Iran and a number of other issues. During an interview with the Lincoln Journal Star, Chuck Hagel said an accurate assessment of his record will demonstrate “unequivocal, total support for Israel” and endorsement of tough international economic sanctions against Iran. He also said the negative assessment of his record by his critics have taken on a “life of its own.” The reality is that if you don’t ascribe to the view that the one way to help Israel is a strike on Iran, you shouldn’t be type-cast as anti-Israel.

The right wing tag-team of Sen. John McCain and Mitch McConnell are slamming Chuck Hagel now. Um, laughable considering John McCain praised him in 2006 saying “I’d be honored to have Chuck with me in any capacity….he’d make a great Secretary of State. Then there’s Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell who praised Hagel in 2007, as “one of the premier foreign policy voices….” In 2008, he also praised Hagel as a “leading voice in foreign affairs.” John McCain is just a bitter man, who is still chewing on sour grapes over the shellacking he took from then-Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Unless something has changed, President Obama can pick his own team, unless a candidate has done something egregious.

The Emergency Committee for Israel sent out the following press release, even reserving the domain, ChuckHagel.com:

The Emergency Committee for Israel will vigorously oppose the confirmation of Chuck Hagel as our next secretary of defense. We have examined Mr. Hagel’s public record, which is marked by an animus toward our friend Israel and a surprising solicitude for our enemies Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah. We believe Mr. Hagel’s record–both his votes and his statements–place him well outside the American mainstream. We look forward to participating in a full and fair debate on Mr. Hagel’s record. We trust, at the conclusion of that debate, the United States Senate will withhold its consent to Mr. Hagel’s selection as Secretary of Defense.

The comment Chuck Hagel made in 2006 that the right wing and some pro-Israeli groups consider anti-Israel:

“I am a United States senator. I am not an Israeli senator. I’m a United States senator, I support Israel, but my first interest is I take an oath of office to the Constitution of the United States.”

Let’s not forget that Chuck Hagel voted for $38 billion to go to Israel over his senate career, so this isn’t someone who is anti-Israel. Chuck Hagel has the scars and “shrapnel” on his body to prove that he would be a good Defense Secretary. He is a Vietnam war veteran with two Purple Hearts, but that means nothing to those who aim to Susan Rice his nomination. The White House has reached out to the Jewish community to address their concerns with Hagel. I guess we will see everything thrown at Chuck Hagel, as they tried to discredit Susan Rice.

Several conservative Jewish organizations have been strongly opposed. Their concerns are multifold. Hagel has previously referred to the “Jewish lobby” (perceived to be a derisive reference) and he has opposed unilateral sanctions against Iran regarding its nuclear program. Iran is one of Israel’s most important national security concerns.  Hagel is criticized for a past op-ed in which he stated that Israel needs to show a commitment to peace.  Also, he has indicated he might support negotiations with Hamas although he supported a bill that said contact should be avoided until it recognized Israel’s sovereignty. Personally, I think the outrage from the Jewish groups is overblown. As he said, his voting record where Israel is concerned is impeccable. “I didn’t sign on to certain resolutions and letters because they were counter-productive and didn’t solve a problem,” the Lincoln Journal Star reports. Chuck Hagel isn’t so out of the mainstream as they are trying to paint him as. Rather than cherry-pick one or two things, why not judge him on the entirety of his career? We have all made comments decades ago that we would probably walk back if given the chance or have evolved from previous positions. One thing about this man is that he says what he means and means what he says. So, if this is the in-your-face nominee from President Obama mocking Republicans, then so be it. We lived through Donald Rumsfeld.  The bigger question for me is why President Obama is surrounding himself with a cabinet that lacks diversity — a mostly all-white group of men. Once all the noise dies down, I predict that Chuck Hagel will be confirmed as our next Defense Secretary. So, I guess I should end by saying, “get ready for a Hagel Pentagon.”

Rick Santorum Supporter Pastor Dennis Terry Says Take A Stand Against Women Who Have Abortions

Rick Santorum is under fire over right wing pastor Dennis Terry, who told a crowd at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church in Louisiana, that  anyone who doesn’t worship God should leave the country, before calling on people to “stand up” against” gay people, liberals and women who have abortions, the Telegraph reports.

To make matters worse, Rick Santorum was sitting in the audience and was spotted clapping approvingly to this vitriol. He also received the personal blessing of Pastor Dennis Terry, who called on God’s will to be done in the upcoming election. The right wing wants us to worry about President Obama’s associations, such as Breitbart’s hatchet job on Derrick Bell, but they neglect to take a look at the people Rick Santorum is “palling” around with.

“Listen to me. If you don’t love America, and you don’t like the way we do things, I’ve got one thing to say, get out!,” he said. “We don’t worship Buddha, we don’t worship Mohammed, we don’t worship Allah. We worship God. We worship God’s son Jesus Christ.”

To a rapturous applause, Pastor Terry continued: “As long as they continue to kill little babies in our mother’s womb, somebody’s got to take a stand and say it’s not right. God be merciful to us as a nation. As long as sexual perversion is becoming normalised, somebody needs to stand up and say God forgive us, God have mercy upon us.” Source: Telegraph

Rick Santorum is no stranger to controversy, but this latest incident further reinforces the fact that he reeks of hypocrisy from every pore on his body. It’s convenient for him to tell the world how much he values his faith while trampling all over the faith of others with such total disregard for personal freedom. This is also the same person who said he wanted to “throw up” after hearing John F. Kennedy’s speech about the separation of church and state. A vote for Rick Santorum is a vote against personal freedom in this country.

URGENT: Karen Handel, the high ranking Susan G. Komen for the Cure official at the center of the Planned Parenthood firestorm, has resigned. I have been blogging about Karen Handel and her hypocrisy for quite some time, including her gubernatorial run and her opposition to gay marriage, as well as her meteoric rise of the chains, though she didn’t possess a college degree.

Karen Handel, the charity’s vice president for public policy, told Komen officials that she supported the move to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood. She said the discussion started before she arrived at the organization and was approved at the highest levels of the charity.

“I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it,” Handel said in her letter. “I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen’s future and the women we serve.” Source: Fox News

I would love to know what strings were pulled for Karen Handel to have been hired as VP of Public Policy when her background is clearly no comparable. The ad for Susan G. Komen sought a candidate with a “health care policy background and existing relationships with Members of Congress and their staff.” The position is DC-based, and required “7+ years of experience on Capitol Hill and/or in government affairs or nonprofit advocacy,” exactly where did Karen Handel fit into those requirements? I guess it’s not what you know, but who you know. Now it will be interesting to see what severance package she will leave with….
