White House Admits Asking News Media to Pull Stories on Malia Obama Mexican Vacation

URGENT:  The White House has admitted to telling news agencies to pull stories on Malia Obama visiting the Mexico for spring break, Politico reports.  Rick Santorum is weighing in, saying that President Obama should “set an example.” Personally, I would not have sent my 14 year old son on spring break in any foreign country, unless I was going to be right there with him.  But that’s my right and choice as a parent. Rick Santorum giving his two cents is laughable. He was upset when people questioned why he and his wife took their dead baby home, supposedly for closure. Well, the Obamas have a right to send their daughter to Mexico on vacation on a school trip. You may not agree with it, but don’t cry foul when you are attacked in the media for your actions.

Kristina Schake, Communications Director to the First Lady, sent the following email to Dylan Byers:

From the beginning of the administration, the White House has asked news outlets not to report on or photograph the Obama children when they are not with their parents and there is no vital news interest. We have reminded outlets of this request in order to protect the privacy and security of these girls.

There’s nothing wrong with a retraction of a news story, but this could have been handled a lot better. The sudden disappearance of the story only added fuel to the fire of controversy and public interest. This would have been a non-story in the past. How many times did we read about where George W. Bush’s children or Chelsea Clinton spent their spring break vacations?  Politicians’ kids should be off-limits, unless they break the law.  I said it when one of George Bush’s daughters were caught using a fake ID. That was a private matter for the parents to deal with. Not the general public.

AZ Gov. Jan Brewer Sinks to New Low, Points Finger in President Obama’s Face During Heated Exchange Over Book

No matter how much you despise or disagree with President Obama, it is very disrespectful to point your finger in his face. That’s what Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer did and she has come off looking like a beeyotch more than anything. Brewer was on hand to greet President Obama when he landed at the Phoenix airport this evening. Well, let’s just say things got pretty ugly:

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer traded words with President Obama after she greeted him at a Phoenix airport Wednesday.

Brewer and Obama “spoke intensely for a few minutes” after he landed at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, according to a White House pool report. At one point, the GOP governor shook her finger at the president.

“He was a little disturbed about my book,” Brewer told a reporter after the incident, referring to her political memoir, “Scorpions for Breakfast.” In the book, Brewer depicted Obama as “patronizing” during an earlier meeting.

“I said to him that I have all the respect in the world for the office of the president,” Brewer said. “The book is what the book is. I asked him if he read the book. He said he read the excerpt. So.”

Brewer said Obama told her “that he didn’t feel I had treated him cordially.”

“I said I was sorry he felt that way but I didn’t get my sentence finished,” Brewer said. “Anyway, we’re glad he’s here. I’ll regroup.”

[....]

During Wednesday’s encounter, Brewer handed Obama a handwritten letter asking him to sit down with her to discuss the “Arizona comeback.”

“I thought we probably would’ve talked about the things that were important to him and important to me, helping one another,” Brewer said of a potential meeting with the president. “Our country is upside down. Arizona was upside down. But we have turned it around. I know again that he loves this country and I love this country.”

More info on the hot mess from Politico:

The pool reporter, POLITICO’s Carrie Budoff Brown, said the scene was far from the norm. Aside from the pointing, they appeared to talk over each other and he appeared to walk away from her while they were still talking.

Brewer said the president brought up the book.

“I thought we probably would’ve talked about the things that were important to him and important to me, helping one another,” she said, appearing flustered. “Our country is upside down. Arizona was upside down. But we have turned it around. I know again that he loves this country and I love this country.”

As I said before, no matter what you think of the president, it’s just plain disrespectful to point a finger in his face. Regardless of what the two actually said to each other, there’s just no way Jan Brewer is  going to come off looking good when the White House Pool Photographer takes a picture of her pointing her finger at the President of the United States. She owes him an apology.

UPDATE#1 (01/27/12): Jan Brewer is now saying President Obama was “disrespectful” for walking away from her as they spoke. She is such an egomaniac that she is defending pointing her finger in his face. That’s equally disrespectful. I would have walked away too. She has now released the letter she had given to President Obama. One thing that was lost on her two days ago was that the letter was a public document and not a private one. This was nothing more than political theatrics on the part of Jan Brewer. Why give the president a letter asking to discuss the border and other issues? Why not just tell him, since you are there face to face? I don’t care how she spins this, she was out of place and wrong to point her finger in his face.

Sen. John McCain also sunk low by defending Jan Brewer’s actions by saying Obama is “prickly.” Um, he’s still the president and should be given the respect due. When an Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at former president George W. Bush, most Americans were upset that he was disrespected on the world stage. The same standard applies to President Obama.

White House Claims Executive Privilege in Social Secretary Desirée Rogers Decision Not to Appear on Capitol Hill over the Salahis Party Crashing

UPDATE#1: 11:42 A.M.The agents who let Tareq and Michaele Salahi through the White House checkpoint at last week’s state dinner have been placed on administrative leave and might be fired, according to Secret Service chief Mark Sullivan.

Executive privilege for President Obama’s Social Secretary Desirée Rogers? Hmmm. It’s starting to look a lot like George W. Bush’s administration. The White House announced on December 1, that Ms. Rogers, a close friend of both President Obama and his wife, would not be testifying to Congress Thursday about the two reality-television aspirants, Tareq and Michaele Salahi, who got by the Secret Service at a recent state dinner to shake hands with President Obama. Besides having egg on their face, what is the real reason why they don’t want Ms. Rogers to appear on Capitol Hill? They didn’t have a problem throwing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Gates on the “lions den” yesterday to make a case for sending more troops to Afghanistan.

“I think you know that based on separation of powers, staff here don’t go to testify in front of Congress,” said press secretary Robert Gibbs in his daily briefing. “She will not be testifying in front of Congress tomorrow.” Really? Other than the obvious embarassment to the White House, how can they justify her not testifying based on executive privilege? Seems like Christmas has come really early for the Salahis and they will be on the receiving end of some monetary gifts from the media.

The sad reality is that the decision of the White House will likely not be contested by Democrats on the House Homeland Security Committee, essentially saving Rogers from a potentially embarrassing turn in the hearing-room spotlight. Since Rogers was only invited, not subpoenaed, to testify by the ranking Republican on the committee, New York Representative Pete King, she faces no legal consequences for declining to attend. Whatever happened to the transparency that President Obama promised on the campaign trail?

In my opinion, Gibbs’ justification for Ms. Rogers’ absence on the basis of a separation of powers has raised eyebrows. It’s laughable that they invoked Executive privilege with regards to a social secretary arranging a party. Is it me or is this just really inane?

New York Governor David Paterson Under Pressure from President Barack Obama to Pull Out of Governor’s Race, Let AG Andrew Cuomo Run Instead

Gov. David Paterson is a dead man walking. It seems that President Barack Obama is meddling in the New York state governor’s race. The latest news to hit the airwaves is that POTUS had asked Governor David Paterson to withdraw from the 2010 race for fear that he cannot regroup from a series of political missteps. Hey, that has been my position for several months. But Paterson defied his critics, “I am running for office,” he told reporters at a Manhattan parade. “I’m not going to discuss confidential conversations,” he said, adding that he planned to continue focusing on matters related to the financial crisis. Whoa. Isn’t this the same guy who cried racism as the reason for his abysmal poll numbers several weeks ago? Er, Governor, you need to step aside and let Andrew Cuomo run instead. You are unpopular and people just don’t like you anymore. You are just downright ineffective and wouldn’t stand a chance against any serious contender from the Republican Party for the governorship.

david+paterson New York Governor David Paterson Under Pressure from President Barack Obama to Pull Out of Governors Race, Let AG Andrew Cuomo Run Instead

The New York Times reported on Sunday that the Obama administration is worried Paterson’s unpopularity could drag down New York’s Democratic members of Congress and the Democratic-controlled state legislature in November 2010 elections. Citing an administration official, the Times reported that Obama’s request that Paterson step aside was put forward by his political advisers, but approved by the president. The newspaper quoted another administration official as saying: “Is there concern about the situation in New York? Absolutely.” That official said the concern had “been conveyed to the governor.”

Paterson, who as lieutenant governor, became an “accidental governor”  last year after Governor Eliot Spitzer stepped down amid a sex scandal. Paterson has seen his approval rating in polls plummet for months after a series of political setbacks. Added to his terrible approval ratings is the global economic crisis that has hit New York hard, with the state struggling with budget shortfalls. The state Senate was gridlocked for nearly five weeks during June and July when both the Republicans and Democrats wrestled for control.

UPDATE#1: Gov. Paterson has outdone himself once again! He blamed President Obama for his current woes. Here are some of his remarks.

If you look at it from their perspective, they haven’t exactly been able to govern in the first year of their administration in the way that other administrations have, where you would have, theoretically, a period in which the new administration is allowed to pass the needed pieces of legislation. To read his entire statement, CLICK HERE.

The president’s request is unusual but is stemming from a serious concern that Paterson will not be elected as governor in any election. Obama’s request was conveyed to the governor by Rep. Gregory Meeks. While I don’t think President Obama should have involved himself with this, it may stem from the fact that Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who was appointed by Paterson to fill Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s senate seat, may be in jeopardy of losing her seat as well. New York Democrats are genuinely concerned that Paterson is toxic right now and may hurt their chances in 2010. So, he is being thrown under the bus by just about everyone, even Rev. Al Sharpton, who contacted the governor and the White House about his concerns.

Last week, a Marist College poll found 20 percent of New York voters approved of Paterson’s performance as governor, compared with 21 percent in June. Only 24 percent of Democrats felt he was doing well. Seventy percent of voters said Paterson isn’t a viable candidate for 2010, including 65 percent of Democrats. Cuomo, in comparison, had a job approval rating of 69%, with 67% of New Yorkers felt he should run for governor, including 77% of Democrats. So, with that said, Governor Paterson, this is your cue to exit the political stage, at least as governor.

President Obama’s strong-arm tactics have cast serious doubts on the ability of Paterson to get anything else done for the remainder of his term. He is the lamest of all lame ducks. For example, the state Senate, still trying to recover from the 31-day stalemate after the June 8 coup, was already reluctant to help the unpopular governor close the $2.1 billion budget gap. This latest no-confidence vote will undoubtedly create a great incentive not to meet the governor half way to resolve this problem. Further, there is a case in the court about the legality of his decision to appoint former Metropolitan Transportation Authority chairman Richard Ravitch as lieutenant governor.

September 11, 2001, Eight Years Later the Struggle for Justice Still Goes On

The lives of every American was changed eight years ago when al Qaeda terrorists hijacked airplanes to crash them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon — twin symbols of America’s financial and military might. Another hijacked plane, intended for the White House or the Capitol, crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, due to the actions of those brave and selfless passengers who fought the hijackers. I often reminisce on the tragic events of that day and I shudder at the thought of such violence visiting our cities again.

New York will honor the 2,751 people who lost their lives after American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center. President Obama, the first lady and White House staff will observe a moment of silence on the South Lawn at 8:46 a.m., the moment Flight 11 hit the north tower.

The president will then go to the Pentagon, where he will make remarks and participate in a wreath-laying ceremony for the 184 victims killed when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the building’s west wall.

White House Corrects Conference Call Number After Directing Reporters to Sex Line

Apparently the White House mistakenly distributed a phone sex number to phone sex operator 1 main Full White House Corrects Conference Call Number After Directing Reporters to Sex Linejournalists. When the conference call number was dialed, the participants were greeted by a seductive female voice requesting a credit card number from callers who”feel like getting nasty.” They were supposed to be listening to a briefing call with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and National Security Advisor Jim Jones to discuss the NATO summit.
I agree that it was stupid for FOX News to cover this as a bonafide news story. However, the folks at the White House really need to be more careful in order to stop giving ammunition to critics who are happy to yell incompetence:
“In a press release, the White House accidentally listed a phone sex number for journalists seeking an ‘on-the-record briefing call with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton a

Journalists seeking to talk a little foreign policy with high-profile Obama administration officials live from the G20 meetings in London this week were solicited for phone sex instead after ringing up the toll-free number given by the White House.

After several efforts to make sure that the phone number was correctly dialed, a call to the White House resulted in a corrected press release. “If you are having trouble dialing into the call, please try this number as an alternative,” and listed the international line included for reporters abroad to dial.

By this time, the conference call was already under way.

Asked for comment about this mishap, Deputy White House Press Secretary Bill Burton responded: “A corrected phone number on a press release is probably one of the stupider things FOX News has covered lately.” Source: Fox News

blackinwhite Russian Ad Featuring a Cartoonish Obama Smacks of Racism, Seems a Little Outrageous
What’s your take on this latest Obama picture? His image is being used in international advertising. Seems that there are some racist undertones to me. The idea behind this Russian ad is from Voskhod, for the ice cream bar Duet. At the same time, it takes a dig at President Obama’s popularity. The line “Flavor of the Week” does suggest that Mr. Obama’s popularity was based on little more than fashion.

Please, share your thoughts on the ad.

President Barack Obama Throws VP Joe Biden Under the Bus

VP Joe Biden has put his foot in his mouth again. His “there’s still a 30 percent chance we’re going to get it wrong” quote is put straight to President Barack Obama during the White House press conference last night and he seemed to want to say: “Vice-President Who?”

As reporters started snickering, Obama came close to conceding that Biden was indeed a joke. “You know, I don’t remember exactly what Joe was referring to, not surprisingly.” I am still wondering, after all this time, what was the logic behind President Obama selecting Joe Biden, ‘gaffe machine extraordinaire, as his vice president.

President Obama went on to say that “I think what Joe may have been suggesting, although I wouldn’t ascribe any numerical percentage to any of this, is that given the magnitude of the challenges that we have, any single thing that we do is going to be part of the solution, not all of the solution.” Hello, Biden was saying nothing of the sort and Obama knew that, just like the rest of us.

Biden’s exact quote, which was read out by Faux News’ Major Garrett at the presser was: “If we do everything right, if we do it with absolute certainty, if we stand up there and we really make the tough decisions, there’s still a 30 percent chance we’re going to get it wrong.” Joe Biden has loose lips, the kind that can do some serious damage. Folks, we should all get used to President Obama explaining “what Joe may have been suggesting.” Geez, I wonder if we have another Dan Quayle on our hands? Hmmm.

White House Tells Incoming President Barack Obama, Sorry, Blair House is Booked

I think President Bush and his cronies have lost their marbles. Why? Apparently the White House has turned down a request from the family of President-elect Barack Obama to move into Blair House in early January so that his daughters can start school on Jan. 5. Gee, I wonder whose accommodations at the Blair House takes precedence over the incoming president? The Obamas were told that Blair House, where incoming presidents usually stay in the five days before Inauguration Day, is booked in early January.

A spokesperson to the Obama transition said. “We explored the idea so that the girls could start school on schedule,’ the spokesperson said. “But, there were previously scheduled events and guests that couldn’t be displaced.”

“It’s not a public schedule,” said Sally McDonough, spokeswoman for First Lady Laura Bush, in refusing to disclose who was staying at Blair House. “It’s not a question of outranking the Obamas. Blair House will be available to them on January 15.” Ms. McDonough said “there’s nothing more to say other than that it’s not available and won’t be available until January 15.” She added that “you’re trying to make a story out of something that’s not a story.” Source: The New York Times

So, in classic Bush style, ask no questions because you’ll get no straight answers. Secrets. Yep. That’s what President Bush and his cronies are into. Secrets.

A White House official said that Mr. Bush does not have family or friends from Texas staying at Blair House during the period which the Obamas requested. But Blair House, the official said, has been booked for “receptions and gatherings” by members of the outgoing Bush administration. Those receptions, the official said, “don’t make it suitable for full-time occupancy by the Obamas yet.” Source: The New York Times

Obama transition officials said that the family is considering other housing options and are hopeful the girls will not miss the start of school. Especially in light of the fact that the outgoing Bush Administration takes precedence over the incoming president. Classic Bush, that’s all I have to say on that one.
