What is going on with these gangs in America? I saw the blaring headlines: One dead, three hurt in Edgewater stabbing, beating. Then what came next was really no surprise to me. Two “young males” are in custody early Monday for the fatal Easter stabbing of a 17-year-old boy in the North Side’s Edgewater neighborhood. Further, a 14-year-old and two adults were also hurt in the possibly gang-related attack, where one of the survivors was struck in the leg with a blunt object.

A 17-year-old Northwest Side boy who suffered multiple stab wounds was pronounced dead at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston at 12:19 a.m. Monday. His name is not being released, pending family notification, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said. About 11:25 p.m., police responded to a report of a stabbing in the 6200 block of North Clark Street, police News Affairs Officer John Henry said. The medical examiner’s office said the stabbing happened at 6227 N. Clark Street.

The news seems sketchy at best, but nonetheless, it seems as though there was a gang-related activity, which begs the question of when will the government take the problems with gangs a lot more serious? An illegal immigrant who was part of a gang took the life of Jamiel Andre Shaw in California. I will continue to state that if the government wanted to do something to stem the activities of the gangs in every community across the United States it could. It is a sad commentary that we are embroiled in a war in Iraq that has no end in sight, costing taxpayers billions of dollars weekly and we cannot fix the myriad of problems existing in this country with gang-related activities at the very top of the list. Police escorts to school for our children is not the answer. The gangs still exist and they will find a way to wreak havoc on the community. We must eradicate the scourge of gangs in communities that are under siege today. Just my thoughts, you be the judge…..
