Queens landlord Eulith Reid beats tenant Hattie Patterson to death in murder-suicide caused by rent dispute

Queens landlord Eulith Reid bludgeons tenant Hattie Patterson to death in an apparent murder-suicide. The two had a vicious dispute over delinquent rent for the basement apartment in which the 48 year old woman resided. Police said after Reid beat Patterson to death, he stabbed himself in the neck and slit his wrists with a machete, which was later found nearby in the Jamaica, NY, home.

Patterson reportedly lived in the basement apartment at the home located on 143rd street, police said. When you circumvent the law, which states quite clearly that basement apartments should not be rented, it can sometimes have disastrous effects. The tenant can refuse to pay and there is nothing the landlord can do because it is illegal in New York City.
