Newt Gingrich Sinks to New Low, Hits Mitt Romney for Speaking French, Like John Kerry (Wikipedia)

It’s time for GOP presidential hopeful and egomaniac Newt Gingrich to slither away back to Georgia. He hit rival Mitt Romney in a new ad, “The French Connection,” with a voice-over that says at one point, “just like John Kerry, he speaks French too.” Really Newt, really? How hypocritical is it that Newt Gingrich has a doctorate in European history from Tulane University? That’s despite his fluency in French. What a waste of airwaves and time dealing with this ineptitude from Newt & Co.

Gingrich’s 1971 dissertation – “Belgian Education Policy in the Congo 1945-1960” — contains a multitude of sources in French in his bibliography.

In total, Gingrich relied upon 143 French-language sources to write his dissertation — including 18 “public documents,” 90 books, 33 published articles and 2 unpublished documents.

He also conducted 8 “private interviews” in Belgium during the course of his research, although the language that he used wasn’t specified in the bibliography. Belgium’s officials languages are French, German and Dutch. Source

Just in case you care, the ad casts Mitt Romney as a moderate, flip-flopping Michael Dukakis-like wimp. The ad starts with the narrator reminding the audience that Mitt Romney presided over a liberal Democratic state during his tenure as Massachusetts governor. The ad features Mitt Romney saying, “Bonjour. Je m’appelle Mitt Romney.” The clip of Romney speaking French was originally aired as a promo for the 2002 Olympics. You will recall he was CEO of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City and the official languages of the Olympics are French and English.

There are a lot of things to hit Mitt Romney on, but I believe it is admirable that anyone can speak multiple languages. It only enhances who they are and makes them more marketable. If the truth be told, George W. Bush could barely speak English, so Mitt Romney is a step up from mediocrity. As I said, it’s time for Newt Gingrich to slither away back to the hills of Georgia, where there are many who think just like him. One of his Atlanta supporters told a local television station that he is supporting Newt Gingrich because “I’m not voting for no damn Yankee.”
