Mitt Romney Once Called England “Just a Small Island,” With Small Roads and Houses

As if the smackdown from British Prime Minister David Cameron wasn’t enough for Mitt Romney questioning whether the British were ready for the Olympics, there’s more. Joshua Keating points out it’s not the first time he’s said unflattering things about the country.  In fact, Romney wrote in his book, No Apology:

“England [sic] is just a small island. Its roads and houses are small. With few exceptions, it doesn’t make things that people in the rest of the world want to buy. And if it hadn’t been separated from the continent by water, it almost certainly would have been lost to Hitler’s ambitions. Yet only two lifetimes ago, Britain ruled the largest and wealthiest empire in the history of humankind. Britain controlled a quarter of the earth’s land and a quarter of the earth’s population.” Source

These are the words to the Atlanticist and the person who has an in-depth knowledge of the Anglo-Saxon heritage shared between the U.S. and the U.K. This is the gift that just keeps on giving. Keep talking Mitt, keep talking.

London mayor Boris Johnson is the latest British official to take offense with Mitt Romney’s comments about security preparedness at the Olympic Games.

Boris Johnson:  “The Geiger counter of Olympomania is going to go zoink! off the scale! People are coming from around the world, and they’re seeing us, and they’re seeing the greatest country on Earth, aren’t they? There are some people who are coming from around the world who don’t yet know about all the preparations we’ve done to get London ready in the last seven years. I hear there’s a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know whether we’re ready. Are we ready?”
