BART Officer Tom Smith Killed By Fellow Officer When Gun Discharged During Home Search

FALLEN POLICE OFFICER: Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer Tom Smith was accidentally shot and killed by another officer while they conducted a probation check and warrant service at an apartment on Dougherty Road in Dublin Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect the officers were searching for was wanted for several robberies on BART property, Officer Down Memorial Page reports. Officer Tom Smith and his colleague made a forced entry into the apartment and that’s when a round discharged, striking Smith.

Officer Tom Smith was pronounced dead after being transported to Eden Medical Center. He served with the BART Police Department for 20 years.

Officer Tom Smith is survived by his wife and a six-year-old daughter.

You will recall that it was BART police officer Johannes Mehserle who killed unarmed black man Oscar Grant III a few years ago. This was the first time a BART officer was killed in the line of duty.
