Kenlissa Jones was charged with malice murder for terminating her pregnancy after taking an abortion pill, WALB reports.
Jones was also charged with possession of a dangerous drug, Cytotec, which she purchased online from a source in Canada, to induce an abortion. She is currently being held without bond at the Dougherty County jail.
Kenlissa Jones delivered her baby five-and-a-half months into her pregnancy en route to a hospital. The baby was born alive but died after 30 minutes.
Jones’ family was shocked to learn she had been pregnant. Her brother Rico Riggins said, “At that point we didn’t even know she was pregnant. And so my first real reaction was like, ‘Why she keeping it away from us?'” He and his wife have been granted guardianship for Kenlissa Jones’ two year old child.
According to WALB, abortions after the first trimester are not allowed in Georgia unless they are performed in a licensed medical facility.
