Jamal Mallard, 29, was found dead in a holding cell at the Jackson Police Department in Mississippi early Sunday morning.
MSNewsNow reports police were called to the 2400 block of Courtview Drive in response to a stolen lawnmower late Saturday night.
Mallard ran when police approached him. The stolen lawnmower was returned to the owner. Police arrested Mallard without incident around 3:43 a.m. at his home. He was charged with petty larceny for the lawnmower theft.
The Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart said Jamal Mallard had no signs of trauma or injury on his body. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation.
Nanette Mallard, the decedent’s mother, is upset at not being allowed to see her son’s body. She said she wanted to see if he had any bruises on his body.
Jamal Mallard’s family believes “something suspicioius may have happened to him,” MSNewsNow reports.
