Senate Republicans Pass Resolution to Start Pulling Plug on Obamacare

That means over 20 million people will be left without healthcare, while they have coverage thanks to taxpayers like you and I.

All the parts of the Affordable Care Act that Donald Trump promised he would keep, Republicans plan to gut. Parents will not have the ability to keep their children on their health insurance until age 26. Insurance companies will no longer be banned for refusing to cover pre-existing conditions, including pregnancy, cancer, HIV and diabetes. The ACA also covers annual “wellness visits” and eliminated co-pays for flu, pneumonia and hepatitis B shots for senior citizens. The mandate that forces insurers to pay for contraception will be gutted.

Gutting the Affordable Care Act will also have an impact on many health-related programs as well, such as grants to the Centers for Disease Control. The ACA also pays for a portion of prescription drug costs for Medicare Part D for seniors.

The Democrats were defeated on every single amendment they presented. The budget resolution was passed at 1:25 a.m. by a 51-48 vote.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s plea to protect women’s healthcare fell on deaf ears. She said,  “If you love your mothers and daughters and wives, please do not unwind the ACA. We need women’s health protected.”

Just like their secret vote held in the night to gut the House Ethics Office, so too was this vote to gut healthcare for millions of Americans. The Republicans also gave themselves the right to reduce the salaries of federal employees to $1 or outright termination by resurrecting the Holman Rule. The sad reality is that people who think gutting Obamacare will mean lower drug prices. On the contrary. They just shot themselves in the foot.

While the law is not dead yet, it should be troubling that the Republicans have no qualms about snatching health insurance from more than 30 million people without have a viable alternative in place.

Donald Trump promises a “seamless” transition to a new plan. We all know how Washington D.C. works. It will be a nightmare.  The House will vote on pulling the plug on Obamacare on Friday.
