Alex van der Zwaan was sentenced to 30 days in prison and a $20,000 fine for lying to the FBI in the Mueller investigation.
The judge said she did not feel that he was remorseful when she handed down the sentence. This is a big deal because it shows that if you lie to the Mueller team, you will go to prison, even if it’s for 30 days.
Van der Zwaan’s sentencing is the first in Mueller’s investigation. The sentencing comes as special counsel Robert Mueller responded to former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort tried to get some of the charges against him dismissed because he thinks he has to right to tell the prosecutor how he should conduct the investigation.
Mueller showed the mother of all receipts — Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s memo granting him authority to not only look for any evidence of collusion with Russia to win the election, but also his dealings with Ukraine. Ooopsie!
