A white female Dallas cop is facing manslaughter charges after black accountant Botham Shem Jean, 26, was fatally shot in his own apartment, which she reportedly mistook for her own.
The officer, who has not been identified, was off duty and returning to her apartment Thursday night when she entered Jean’s apartment. Dallas police say that the officer, who was wearing her uniform, pulled her gun and fired when she was confronted by Jean.
The officer called dispatch to report the shooting. She told responding officers that she shot Jean after mistaking his apartment for her own.
Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall said at a press conference on Friday that a blood sample was drawn from the officer to determine her drug and alcohol levels. The police are seeking a warrant for manslaughter charges against the officer.
The shooting occurred shortly before 10 p.m. at the South Side Flats apartment complex in downtown Dallas. Botham Shem Jean was treated at the scene but later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
It is not clear how the officer entered Jean’s apartment. The identity of the officer will be released pending charges.
Botham Shem Jean grew up in the Caribbean island of St. Lucia.
