Prime Minister Theresa May slams Donald Trump after he praised Rep. Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.) for body-slamming Ben Jacobs, a reporter with British newspaper The Guardian, saying it is “completely unacceptable.”
During a campaign rally in Montana on Thursday, Trump joked that Greg Gianforte’s assault on Jacobs in 2017 helped him win the special election.
“Never wrestle him. Never. Any guy that can do a body slam, he’s my kind of…he’s my guy,” Trump said as the crowd cheered. “We endorsed Greg really early, but I heard that he had body slammed a reporter. And he was way up…and I said, ‘Oh, this is terrible, he’s going to lose the election.’ But then I said, ‘Well wait a minute, I know Montana pretty well, I think it might help him,’ and it did…He’s a great guy and a tough cookie,” Trump continued.

“He [Trump] obviously made comments at a political rally, and those are for him. But more generally we would always say that any violence or intimidation against a journalist is completely unacceptable,” May’s spokesperson said.

The Guardian’s US editor John Mulholland also condemned Trump’s remarks: “The President of the United States tonight applauded the assault on an American journalist who works for the Guardian. To celebrate an attack on a journalist who was simply doing his job is an attack on the First Amendment by someone who has taken an oath to defend it.”
“In the aftermath of the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, it runs the risk of inviting other assaults on journalists both here and across the world where they often face far greater threats. We hope decent people will denounce these comments….”
Trump’s reprehensible comments comes as the public outcry over Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s brutal murder by Saudis at their Turkish consulate continues to intensify. Trump is giving the Saudis cover to find a scapegoat.
Trump said that Khashoggi may have been murdered by rogue killers though he has zero evidence to back up that claim. Shortly after the news broke about Khashoggi’s murder, Trump said that he wasn’t an American citizen, but a green card holder.
