Twitter responds as you’d expect after Donald Trump tweeted that Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith is “an outstanding person” and touted his two upcoming rallies on her behalf:  “A racist rallying for a racist,” one user tweeted.

Trump tweeted: “I will be in Gulfport and Tupelo, Mississippi, on Monday night doing two Rallies for Senator Hyde-Smith, who has a very important Election on Tuesday. She is an outstanding person who is strong on the Border, Crime, Military, our great Vets, Healthcare & the 2nd A. Needed in D.C.”

Hyde-Smith has been under fire for saying she would sit in the front row at a public hanging, “joked” about voter suppression, posted photograph of herself wearing a Confederate hat, attended a segregated academy in the 1970s and enrolled her daughter in one a few years later and backed a revisionist history of the Civil War.

Advertisers, including Wal-Mart, yanked their support for Hyde-Smith and even demanded contribution refunds. Major League Baseball (MLB) was shamed into pulling their support for her after their donation to her campaign was publicized. It’s shameful that they made the donation on Friday, days after the firestorm erupted.

Hyde-Smith’s comments have enraged many voters in Mississippi. One voter said that “We’ve overcome and somebody forgot to tell her.” Hyde-Smith’s comments are meant to remind Mississippi voters that her opponent, Mike Espy, is black. But don’t be fooled, but the racist bullhorn work. Mississippi is a racially polarized state and Cindy Hyde-Smith doubling down on race is going to help her. Younger voters are the path for Espy to win.
