Walmart yanked its support from Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and requested a contribution refund over her “public hanging” and “liberal voter suppression” ahead of the runoff election.

Walmart responded to a tweet from actress/activist Debra Messing, who called out the discount retailer for contributing $2,000 to Hyde-Smith’s campaign. “Completely understand your concern. Sen. Hyde-Smith’s recent comments clearly do not reflect the values of our company and associates. As a result, we are withdrawing our support and requesting a refund of all campaign donations,” Walmart wrote.

Many people aren’t buying Hyde-Smith’s claims that she was joking when she made both comments. They believe it was a racist dog whistle to remind voters that her opponent, former Obama cabinet official Mike Espy is black.

Hyde-Smith also posted a photograph on Facebook wearing a Confederate hat and holding a rifle. The Confederacy has never stood for anything good in relation to black Americans. It was a scourge.

Hyde-Smith took the photo in 2014 during a visit to the Jefferson Davis Home and Presidential Library, where she declared, “Mississippi history at its best!”

Republicans are now worried that race may end up in the Democratic’s favor as the Alabama senate race did when accused child molester Roy Moore lost to Doug Jones. A huge black voter turnout helped push Jones across the finish line.
