The family of Jakelin Caal Maquin issued a statement disputing claims she “had not eaten or had any water for several days” as she and her father crossed the desert to the US border.

The 7-year-old Guatemalan girl’s family also disputes the cause of her death being reported as a result of “dehydration and septic shock.”

The attorneys representing the family say the El Paso County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released Jakelin’s autopsy results and caution against unsubstantiated claims.

Neither Jakelin Caal Maquin nor her father speaks English, but the Custom & Border Patrol forms he signed were not in his native Q’eqchi or Spanish, but in the English language. “It is unacceptable for any government agency to have persons in custody sign documents in a language they clearly do not understand,” the statement reads.
