Billionaire Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says “I don’t really understand” why furloughed federal workers need food banks during the government shutdown.
During an interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box, Ross was asked what he thought about the reports that some federal workers were forced to go to homeless shelters due to the Trump government shutdown.
“Well, I know they are, and I don’t really quite understand why,” Ross responded. “Because, as I mentioned before, the obligations that they would undertake, say borrowing from a bank or a credit union, are, in effect, federally guaranteed. So the thirty days of pay that some people will be out, there’s really no reason why they shouldn’t be able to get a loan against it.”
Ross thinks these federal workers should roll up to a bank and apply for loans. Um, their paystubs shows zeros. Spoken like a true one-percenter.
This “let them eat cake” moment comes after Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, insulted the thousands of people affected by the shutdown saying that the pain they’re experiencing is worth it. No. It isn’t.
Speaker Pelosi weighed in on Ross’ comments: “Is this the ‘let them eat cake’ kind of attitude, or ‘call your father for money?”
