Rep. Matt Gaetz was overheard telling Donald Trump on a phone call that “I was happy” to threaten Michael Cohen on “for you” over his tweet about outing Cohen’s “girlfriends” to his wife.
This comes as Gaetz is under investigation by the Florida Bar Association for threatening Cohen and his family in a Twitter hours before his public testimony before the House Oversight Committee.
Edward-Isaac Dovere, a reporter for The Atlantic, tweeted on Thursday that he overhead Gaetz talking to Trump on the telephone, who called the lawmaker from Hanoi to discuss Cohen’s testimony and his threatening tweet.
Dovere said he overhead Gaetz telling Trump, “I was happy to do it for you. You just keep killing it.”
During Cohen’s testimony on Wednesday, Rep. Stacey Plaskett (D-Virgin Islands) suggested that Gaetz be referred for possible criminal prosecution for witness tampering or intimidation over the tweet.
Gaetz deleted the tweet and apologized after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hinted at an ethics investigation over the threat. He also tweeted that he apologized directly to Michael Cohen, but the fact that he allegedly told Trump he threatened Cohen on his behalf simply means his apologies are hollow.
President Trump called @mattgaetz last night from Hanoi to talk the Cohen testimony and the threats (since rescinded) Gaetz made about Cohen.
"I was happy to do it for you. You just keep killing it," Gaetz was heard telling him.
(Gaetz told me he doesn't discuss calls w/POTUS)
