A group of Senate Democrats introduced a bill to block Donald Trump from using disaster relief funds to build the southern wall. Among the backers of the bill are presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren (MA), Kamala Harris (CA), Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Kirsten Gillibrand (NY).
The “Protecting Disaster Relief Funds Act” would block Trump from taking disaster relief funds allocated to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Homeland Security or the Army Corps of Engineers and using that money in the construction of the southern border wall.
Sen. Harris said in a statement, “The president simply cannot go around Congress to fund his ridiculous vanity project. I’m proud to introduce this bill today to ensure that funds intended for victims of natural disasters do not go towards a wall that Congress won’t fund and people on the border don’t even want.”
“This bill will stand up for Congress’ power of the purse and help California families affected by recent natural disasters begin the process of recovery,” she continued.
Sens. Robert Menendez (NJ), Richard Blumenthal (CT) and Ed Markey (MA) are among the senators introducing the bill.
This comes as Reps. Joaquin Castro and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced a joint resolution to block Trump’s national emergency declaration to siphon off funds from the military and Treasury to build the wall.
I ask all members of Congress — Democrat and Republican — to support this joint resolution to terminate President Trump’s unconstitutional national emergency declaration to build his border wall. It sets a dangerous precedent and steals congressional authority. Will you sign on? pic.twitter.com/WSNFyAqvRS
