GOP Rep. Mike Kelly says, “I am a person of color. I am white,” in defense of Donald Trump’s racist attacks on four non-white female lawmakers.
“You know, they talk about people of color. I’m a person of color. I’m white. I’m an Anglo Saxon. People say things all the time, but I don’t get offended,” Kelly told Vice News.
Kelly’s remark came before he voted against a resolution to condemn Trump for his racist tweets telling Reps. Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley to “go back to the crime infested places from which they came.” The resolution passed mostly along party line with four Republicans and one independent voting with the Democrats.
Kelly told The Hill that “the reporter’s tweet mischaracterized our conversation and my broader point: We’re all created equal. It’s time to stop fixating on our differences and focus on what unites us.”
