Sen. Kamala Harris claps back at Tulsi Gabbard’s smackdown during the Democratic debate by bringing up her record with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. She should have done that on the stage, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that she never responded to the accusations about her prosecutorial record.
Harris told CNN’s Anderson Cooper during an post-debate interview that Gabbard is an apologist for al-Assad, who murders his citizens “like cockroaches.” “I can only take what she says and her opinions so seriously.”
Harris: “I am obviously a top-tier candidate and so I did expect that I would be on the stage and take hits tonight because there are a lot of people on the stage trying to make the next debate. Especially when people are at zero or one percent or whatever she might be at.
“I think this coming from someone who has been an apologist for an individual, Assad, who has murdered the people of his country like cockroaches, she who has been embraced and been an apologist for him in a way she refuses to call him a war criminal. I can only take what she says and her opinions so seriously. I am prepared to move on.”

Gabbard went harder on Harris for her record than she did to Assad’s face when she visited his country. As one Twitter user wrote, Assad “oversees a prison network where 120,000+ Syrians have been tortured, murdered and not even returned to their families for burial.”
I am surprised that Sen. Harris did not have a better response to the attack on her record as a prosecutor and later as California’s attorney general. It seems like she’s getting a dose of her own medicine after having Joe Biden on the ropes when she attacked him over busing during the first Democratic debate.
The circular firing squad by Democratic candidates is playing right into the hands of Donald Trump. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Bernie Sanders gave Trump talking points by attacking Hillary Clinton’s qualifications. Fast forward to 2019, they are doing the same thing again. People who have zero chance at being the Democratic nominee are helping Trump’s reelection bid. This is shameful on every possible level.
