ABC 13 Houston Morning Anchor Rita Garcia Welcomes Her First Child

The baby boom continues at ABC 13 Houston. Local news station morning anchor Rita Garcia gave birth to her first child, a girl named Jordan, over the weekend. Garcia made the announcement on social media late Sunday night, sharing photos of baby Jordan alongside her husband, Sergio Selvera.

“What can I say, our hearts exploded!” Garcia wrote in posts on Facebook and Instagram. “We are so in love and she is happy and healthy! Our daughter Jordan blessed us with her presence on Saturday (January 21, 23).”

Congratulations poured out online from her ABC 13 crew, other Houston news broadcasters, and Garcia fans. “I’m so happy for my dear friend, morning host Rita Garcia and her sweet husband Sergio!” wrote fellow ABC 13 host Melanie Lawson on Facebook. “They welcomed [their] first baby, beautiful girl in the world this weekend. But I’ll let them tell you all the details – I can’t wait to meet her!”

Since first announcing what she was expecting in September (she also told Chron about her pregnancy cravings that same month), Garcia has been documenting the progress of her belly on social media up until last week when she went on maternity leave. On January 18th, Garcia was still at work. ABC 13 host and reporter Jacob Rascon posted a photo with Garcia, writing, “You’re done. But is today that day? We will see!”

The birth of Garcia’s first child comes just a week after ABC 13 meteorologist Rachel Bryers announced she had given birth to her second child, a girl named Lane. Briers and Garcia were among five ABC 13 employees who announced late last year that they were expecting children soon. In December, ABC 13 digital anchor Jonathan Bruce, who has filled in for evening host Chauncey Glover for the past few months, announced the birth of a son, according to a post by Houston-based media blogger Mike McGuff.

Garcia, an Austin native, is a graduate of Texas State University and began her television career in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas on ABC KRG – Ch 5 where she was Cameron County Bureau Chief. She moved to Houston in 2009 while working for Fox 26. Prior to joining ABC 13, she also worked as a morning anchor in Los Angeles on Good Day LA KTTV – Fox 11 but returned to Texas as of 2021.
