Affidavit: Missing Waco man shot to death during altercation; the suspects decided to “put him out of his misery”

Waco, TexasKWTX)- James Kaylan Willis, 18, and Brandon Xavier Stevens, 19, accused of murder and fabrication of evidence in the Stanley Wilcox murder case, told detectives that Wilcox was injured in a gunfight during an argument at their home, and they decided that must take him out of the house. his suffering,” reads an affidavit obtained by KWTX.

Wilcox, 59, went missing on December 29, 2022, and his remains were found in a ravine in the 1100 block of 9th Street near the Baylor University campus shortly before 9 a.m. on Friday, January 6.

Affidavit obtained by KWTX shows that the investigator obtained Wilcox’s mobile phone after it was turned in by a homeless woman in a convenience store.

The investigator later visited a gym that Wilcox frequented and was told by staff that Wilcox “was not at the gym for more than 10 days, which was highly uncharacteristic even though it was Christmas break,” the affidavit says.

When detectives visited the Wilcox home at 802 Garrett Avenue, they encountered three people identified in the affidavit as Willis, Stevens, and 17-year-old Havian Hamilton “living in the house.”

Willis initially told detectives that Wilcox left the house around Christmas Eve and left him the keys. He later agreed to a search of the house by the police.

While at the house, the investigator “uncovered suspicious circumstances: Stanley’s bed in the bedroom was devoid of sheets, there was glass at the threshold of their door, Stanley’s ID and debit card were in a strange place in the living room, and many other things that needed clarification.”

Potential evidence, including tools, a knife, Wilcox’s personal papers, packing tools and cleaning supplies, was found by an investigator, the sworn letter said.

A search of Wilcox’s car allegedly revealed “a large amount of blood that had been washed up in the trunk of the car,” the affidavit said.

Investigators were issued a warrant to search the property, and all three residents of the house allegedly agreed to speak with detectives.

Stevens and Willis allegedly admitted to “being present and taking an active part in the shooting of Stanley Wilcox,” the affidavit states.

Both men allegedly told detectives that Wilcox’s body was wrapped in sheets and lying in a ravine near the Baylor University campus.

The affidavit also shows that Stevens and Willis said Wilcox was shot after a confrontation led to “the shot”.

Stevens and Wilcox are being held at McLennan County Jail on $2 million bail.

Hamilton, who allegedly admitted to knowing about the murder, was accused of failing to report the crime.
