GODFRY – Ahead of the IHSA Individual Regionals, Alton High wrestling team coach Eric Roberson believes his team is reading the roadmap correctly.
And you don’t need a GPS.
Alton finished second in the team event with a weekend runner-up at the MICDS Invitational in St. Louis at the Eric Lewis Invitational at Mary Institute-Country Day School. The Redbirds had a pair of individual champions, five second-place finishes, a third-place finish, and three seventh-place finishes.
“Great job,” Roberson said. “I thought our team was fighting with a lot of competitive spirit. We’re starting to come together.”
The Illinois High School Association individual regional competition is scheduled for February 4th. Elton High School will host the Class 3A Local Regional Competition. Players who take first, second and third places in each weight category advance to the Normal Community High Sectional Tournament, which will be held on February 10-11.
In its Individual Regional Class 3A, Alton will host Belleville East, Belleville West, Collinsville, Edwardsville, Granite City, O’Fallon and Quincy.
The Class 2A Regionals will take place on February 4th in Jacksonville and the Class 1A Regionals will take place on February 4th in Roxanne.
The Civic Memorial will compete in the Class 2A Individual Regional Races in Jacksonville. Other teams participating will include the Jersey, Jacksonville, Triad, Springfield High, Springfield Lanfier and Springfield Southeast. They will wrestle for the sport in the Highland 2A Individual Sectional alongside wrestlers from the Mahomet-Seymour, Centralia and Chatham-Glenwood regions.
At the Roxana Class 1A individual regional level, Shells will be joined by Belleville Althoff, East Alton-Wood River, Breese Central, Cahokia, Carlyle, Pinckneyville, Red Bud, Salem and Sparta as hosts. Qualifying players will advance to the Carterville Class 1A individual section alongside grapplers at the Regionals in Lawrenceville, Anna-Jonesboro and Auburn.
The IHSA State Individual Tournament is scheduled for February 16-18 at the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois at Champaign.
The IHSA Tag Team Event is scheduled for February 21st, and the IHSA State Wrestling Tag Team Event will take place February 24-25 at the Grossinger Motors Arena at the University of Illinois Bloomington.
In second place at the MICDS Invitational, Alton edged out third-place finisher Howell North by half a point, 276–275.5. Kirkwood High School became the tag team champion with 316.5 points.
Francis Howell was fourth with 262.5, followed by Fox with 209, Cahokia 187, Rook 154, Hazelwood West 103.5. and Ritenour and St. Charles West are tied for ninth place with 102 points.
St. Louis High School ranked 11th with 72 points, followed by STEM Academy 71, Maplewood 68.5, Westminster 44, Parkway Central 28, McCluer North 25, MICDS 24, University City 6 and Chaminade 3.
Alton’s Chris Jones at 138lbs and Shane Scott at 190lbs walked away with MICDS championship appearances.
Jones pinned Kirkwood’s Trevor Hastings at 3:41 for the 138-pound championship. At 190 pounds, Scott defeated Irvin Heggeman Francis Howell in 1:06 of the title match.
The Redbirds got second place from Aslan Merioles at 120, William Harris at 126, Yaveyon Freeman at 144, Antoine Phillips at 150 and Jackson Sheets at 285.
Manny Morrisette placed third for Alton at 157 pounds. He pinned Ladue’s Lelind Stranger at 1:48 of the first-place match.
Caleb Kristner, Marshall Skelton and Christian Brown finished in seventh place.
“Every wrestler in the roster contributes,” Roberson said. “We will continue to prepare for the next few weeks of the postseason.”
