Texas added another goal to their passing game.
Former Georgia wide receiver Adonai Mitchell announced Friday night that he would be moving to Texas. Later that night, the Longhorns confirmed Mitchell’s signing.
In two years in Georgia, Mitchell won two national championships. He averaged 14.7 yards in 38 receptions.
“New home, same mission,” Mitchell tweeted.
Mitchell played in six games last season and scored in both Georgia playoff games. As a freshman, Mitchell started 12 times and caught a good touchdown against Alabama in the national championship game.
The 6-4, 190-pound Mitchell was rated as a four-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class.
After the Alamo Bowl on December 29, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian opined that “it felt like we were looking for a third out all year.” This shouldn’t be a problem for Texas in 2023.
Mitchell is joining the receiving corps that should retain Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington, who have combined 110 receptions, 1,412 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns in 2022. Casey Kane ended his second season in Texas with a 108-yard play at the Alamo. Bowl. Isaiah Nayor, who was the 2021 All-Mountain West Conference honoree, is also set to recover from a knee injury that saw the Wyoming transfer ruled out last season.
Texas also boasts a large number of young talent among its recipients. Incoming freshmen Jontay Cooke, Ryan Niblett and DeAndre Moore received four stars, while rising sophomore Brenen Thompson received four stars in the 2022 intake cycle. Whittington previously compared second-year wide receiver Savion Red to NFL star Deebo Samuel.
However, Texas is looking for someone to coach these receivers next season. Earlier this month, former UT wide receivers coach Brennan Marion left Austin to become offensive coordinator at UNLV.
