AP source: Mahomes Chiefs suffered a high ankle sprain

KANSAS CITY, Missouri. — Patrick Mahomes sprained his right ankle during the Kansas City Chiefs’ divisional playoff victory over the Jaguars, a person familiar with the injury told The Associated Press Sunday, but the All-Pro quarterback expects to play next weekend ende. AFC Championship Game.

Mahomes was injured late in the first quarter on Saturday when a Jacksonville defenseman landed on him. X-rays taken during the game came back negative, and Mahomes returned from half time to lead Kansas City to a 27–20 victory.

Mahomes underwent an MRI on Sunday and she showed no structural damage, a person familiar with the results told the AP on condition of anonymity because the team did not disclose the test results.

“I don’t want to jump right into it, but let’s just see how things go over the next couple of days,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Saturday night. “It will be painful, I know, but let’s see where he is. He’s had it before and could keep pushing, actually against Jacksonville, anytime – a couple of years ago, same deal.

“The main thing is that he is safe,” Reid said, “or as safe as possible on the football field. It is important”.

The Chiefs will play the winner of Sunday’s game between Cincinnati and Buffalo. If it’s the Bengals, their rematch from last year’s AFC title game will be played at Arrowhead Stadium. If it’s Billy, then the game will take place in Atlanta.

Mahomes said after Saturday night’s game that his ankle “feels better than I thought it would now.”

“Of course, now I have a lot of adrenaline. We’ll see how it goes, but tonight I’ll start treatment right away and try my best to be as close to 100% as possible by next week,” he said. “Luckily for us, we played early in the game on Saturday, so we have almost half a day to rest my ankle.”

However, high ankle sprains can be potentially serious injuries. Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Hehler was injured in late November and placed on injured reserve and only returned to training last week.

“Pain is pain,” Mahomes said. – You’ll have to deal with it.

Mahomes missed most of the second quarter against the Jaguars, but still threw for 195 yards and scored two goals. The second of these was a shot at Marquez Valdez-Scantling in the fourth quarter, which eventually secured the winning lead.

While Mahomes was out, backup Chad Henn also led the Chiefs to a 12-game touchdown with a 98-yard touchdown.

“I have to tell you that the 15th is hard as a nail when he can come back,” said Justin Reed, a security guard for the Chiefs. The guy – it just shows you his love for the game, his character and his desire to just be there for his team and do his best to help us win.”
