Award-winning teacher Alief ISD has been found shot to death in the backyard of a Sugar Land home, police said.

SUGAR LAND, TX (KIAH) — A Houston teacher has been found shot to death in the backyard of her home in Sugar Land, a suburb of Houston, police said.

At around 10 p.m. Saturday evening, Sugar Land police officers found a woman with multiple gunshot wounds in a house on the 1100 block of Oxford Mills Lane in the New Territory. Police said neighbors heard gunshots around 9:50 p.m. and believe the shooting was related to domestic violence.

The victim was later identified as Wendy Duane, 28, who was a third grade teacher at Boone Elementary School in the Alif Independent School District. In 2021, the district named her the ESL Teacher of the Year.

Alief ISD PR specialist Craig Eichhorn said grief counselors have been on the Boone Elementary School campus since Monday and have spoken to students and staff mourning Duane’s death.

“The principal expressed a huge loss to the entire school and Alief County,” Eichhorn said. “RS. Duam was fun to work with and had a great relationship with the staff at the school where she taught.”

Grievance counselors are expected to remain on campus to serve both students and staff for as long as required.

“You could feel a huge loss among students and staff (at the school on Monday),” Eichhorn said. “I feel like I missed getting to know her.”

Police have identified a suspect in Duan’s murder, but have not released his identity. The investigation is ongoing.
