SAN ANTONIO – His playful, accommodating nature made him a favorite coach of the students.
But Jacob Sanchez, 35, was also the inspiration, leader, and innovator that made him so likable to those he worked with at Devine High School.
On Thursday, Sanchez collapsed at the start of class and staff performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office says he died of a heart attack. On Friday, the Devine community gathered for a pre-school picket and school counselors were ready to help students deal with the situation.
Principal Kandy Darnell was with him just a few minutes before he passed out.
“He seemed fine and everything seemed fine,” she said.
Darnell has known Sanchez since he was a student himself and said he really shined as a teacher.
– He was a teacher for children, I would say so. He took the time to interact with the children,” she said.
Sanchez’s wife Rebecca Pau issued the following statement: “My honey has been a light in our lives. He kept our family in suspense, constantly walking and always laughing. We lived a wonderful life together. He loved us with all his heart and loved his life. He was dedicated to the Devine community and kids were his motivation every day.”
Sanchez’s twin brother David Sanchez thanks the community for the great support.
“Our brother loved his family, friends and especially his students. He was the kind of person you aspired to be. His door was always open, just to listen. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. We would like to thank you on behalf of our family for all the love and condolences that have been given. This community has come together during this difficult time. We are very proud of the impact he has had on our hometown.”
The funeral is organized as follows.
Visitation will take place Thursday, January 12 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Primrose Funeral Services Funeral Home 303 W. College Ave., Devine, TX.
