Biden Administration Gives 2 Nevada Companies Millions in Grants, Tesla Announces Expansion

RENO, Nevada (KOLO). Two Nevada companies receive tens of millions of dollars in grants under President Biden’s infrastructure bill.

American Battery Technology, based in Fearnley, will receive a grant of more than US$57 million.

The company will build and operate a commercial-scale facility to demonstrate its process for manufacturing batteries from lithium-based sources. The goal is to create a more sustainable supply chain for US battery manufacturing.

American Battery Technology has already secured over 10,000 acres of lithium-bearing resources near Tonopah.

Lilac Solutions will receive a $50 million grant for its Fearnley project. Their project will be to demonstrate the production of lithium on a commercial scale.

The project will use lithium IX extraction technology, which the Department of Energy believes can unlock lithium production from domestic resources currently unavailable to older technologies.

Electric vehicle company Tesla also announced that it will invest its own funds in Sparks.

“The manufacturing boom of the first two years of the Biden presidency continues today as Tesla announced it will invest more than $3.6 billion to build batteries and electric trailers in Sparks, Nevada. The announcement is the latest of more than $300 billion in private sector investment in clean energy and semiconductor manufacturing announced since the President took office. This will create more than 3,000 well-paying jobs in Nevada, helping America become a leader in clean energy production, strengthening our energy security, and ultimately lowering costs for families,” said Mitch Landrieu, President Biden’s infrastructure coordinator.
