Bishop Gorman students learn about local journalism on a tour of the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

A group of students from Bishop Thomas C. Gorman Catholic School visited the Tyler Morning Telegraph newsroom on Tuesday afternoon.

During the tour, students asked journalists questions and learned about M. Roberts Media and its role in society.

Kelly Hayes, Parenting Advisor, said the campus newspaper The Lance is being updated and brought back to life. Hayes, students from Lance State, Director of Public Affairs Jill Coan, and teacher Conner Burkhalter were on the tour, all of whom had the opportunity to see how a day in the life of the local newspaper staff goes.

Managing Editor Santana Wood took the students on a field trip, which consisted of meetings with members of the editorial, advertising, digital, and trade teams who performed their day-to-day functions at M. Roberts Media, which runs not only the Morning Telegraph, but other publications including Longview News. -Journal. , Marshall News Messenger, Kilgore News Herald, Panola Watchman, Victoria Advocate and ETX View Magazine.

Students also had the opportunity to submit ideas for news stories, such as feature articles and events happening on their local campus. Wood and the Tyler Paper reporters also gave journalism advice and guidance to students, as well as demonstrating the importance of local journalism in the East Texas community.
