RIO DE JANEIRO (AP). Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the Congress in the capital on Sunday, climbing onto its roof and smashing glass in its windows.
Other demonstrators gathered outside the presidential palace and the Supreme Court, although it was not immediately clear whether they had succeeded in breaking into the buildings.
The incidents, which are reminiscent of the Jan. 6 invasion of the US Capitol, came just a week after leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was sworn in on Jan. 1.
Bolsonaro’s supporters have been protesting Lula’s electoral victory since October 30, blocking roads, setting cars on fire and gathering outside military buildings, asking for the military to intervene.
