An alleged migrant smuggler’s car overturned on a highway; two passengers were taken to an emergency room in El Paso
EL PASO, TX (border report). A US Border Patrol agent was shot in the chest on Thursday near Lordsburg, New Mexico, while inspecting a vehicle suspected of being involved in smuggling migrants.
The agent received several bullet wounds to the chest from a passenger in the car; he survived because he was wearing a bulletproof vest and was able to return fire as the car sped away, US Customs and Border Protection said in a statement.
The car fled down NM Highway 146 and overturned a few miles away. Arriving border guards detained six people from the car, two of whom required additional medical assistance. They were taken to an emergency room in El Paso, CBP said. Their condition is unknown.
The agent who was shot was treated and released.
New Mexico Senator Crystal Diamond, R-Elephant Butte, said the agent stopped a vehicle believed to be carrying illegal migrants.
“While many details are still unknown, one thing is clear: today one of our brave border guard agents took a bullet for this country and our community. I pray for a speedy recovery and I am grateful that the emergency situation at the border did not claim the life of this agent, ”she said.
The incident is being investigated by the FBI, as are most cases involving assault on a government official. The New Mexico State Police are helping.
CBP said its Office of Professional Responsibility is also looking into the incident.
NM 146 runs from Hachita to Interstate 10 east of Lordsburg. Hachita is 45 miles from Antelope Wells, New Mexico, which borders El Berrendo, Mexico.
