Miles Frost and actors MD: Musical
Broadway in Cincinnati is not yet halfway through the current season. Several big hits from Great White Way are still on their way to the Aronoff Center, including two Best Tony Musical winners – hadestown (April) and Moulin rouge! Musical (Maybe). But the 2023-2024 season has just been announced and eight more exciting, award-winning musicals will be presented between October 2023 and May 2024.
First next fall will be MD: Musical (September 5-17), telling the story of famous singer, songwriter and dancer Michael Jackson. The jukebox hit show won three Tony awards in 2022.
A mounth later, girl from the northern country (October 17-29). Written by respected Irish playwright Conor McPherson, 20 songs by Bob Dylan are woven into a story set in Duluth, Minnesota during the Great Depression. The Broadway cast included two performers with Cincinnati roots: Todd Almond, a CCM alum who starred in several shows at the Ensemble Theater before moving to New York, and Kimber Elibe Sproul, a SCPA and CCM alum. No word on whether they will tour.
Mrs. Doubtfire (December 5-17) about an unemployed divorced actor who poses as a Scottish nanny to be close to his children. Based on the 1993 film starring Robin Williams, this melodic musical will appeal to families.
beetle juice (January 16-28, 2024) is another musical with cinematic roots. Tim Burton’s 1988 film about a manic, irreverent ghost starring Michael Keaton has evolved into a show true to its brash roots.
Then this Six (April 23 – May 5, 2024), turning the six wives of King Henry VIII into pop icons. They revisit their tragic stories with powerful 21st century pop tunes. This is a revue of female power from beginning to end.
The season also includes Peter Pan (March 12-24, 2024), the legendary family favorite about a boy who won’t grow up, in a spectacular new production. Filling the calendar is two one-week runs: Disney Aladdin (November 14-19), family performance from the producer The Lion Kingand Hook (May 14–19, 2024), a ludicrous detective inspired by the classic Murder Mystery board game in the style Get the knives movies.
