On January 25, Pike School of the Humanities senior scholar Cade Renfro announced his intention to play football at Delta State University in Mississippi.

Renfro chose Delta State over offerings from other schools such as North Alabama, West Alabama, and Belhaven. Renfort, whose brother plays in Troy, also received a preferred offer from Troy. Renfro played offensive line, linebacker and was a Patriots player this season, but will play linebacker in college.

“I was visiting there last weekend and really enjoyed the program and the coaches,” Renfro said of Delta State. “The coaches are doing a great job there and I am very happy to join what they have already started. I wanted to play as a midfielder and their defense is great for my game, so that also influenced my decision.”

The 6-foot, 205-pounder earned All-Messenger honors this season as a forward and linebacker. He also received the Pike Lib award for Most Valuable Defender. In addition to being the PLAS leader in the offensive line, Renfro totaled 102 tackles, 21 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks and three fumble recoveries. He was also Pike Lieb’s starter this season.

Delta State finished the season 11-2, in which the Statesmen won the Gulf South Conference championship and reached 9th place in Division II before losing to West Florida in the second round of the Division II playoffs. Delta State has a rich football tradition, with eight conference championships since 1998, four regional championships since 2000, and a Division II national championship.

Renfro said he intends to hit the field early and often in Delta State.

“The goal is to get in and try to earn a seat,” he said. “I know most freshmen don’t play and I’m willing to take my time on the bench, but I want to go and help as soon as I can.”

Renfro is the second Troy native to move to Delta State this week after Charles Henderson Sr. Connor Jones pledged to play school on Tuesday. Renfro and Jones were teammates at Pike Lib for two seasons before Jones moved on to Charles Henderson. They will reunite in Delta State.

“We both played together (in Pike Lib) and we had a really good two years together,” said Renfro. “I saw him do it yesterday and I actually did it (to the team) at the time. I am very happy to be able to play with him again.”

National Signing Day February 1st.
