The California developer behind other mixed-use and hotel projects in San Antonio is spearheading another residential project that will transform a section of the street between St. Mary’s Strip and Tobin Hill. Harris Bay, which has an office in San Antonio, is planning a 1,000-unit residential complex with 70,000 square feet of commercial space, Express-News reports.
The project will be built along West Josephine Street in the Tobin Hill Historic District between the popular nightlife destination, St. Mary’s Street and the Pearl. It’s right around the corner from The Lonesome Rose honky-tonk club.
According to the rezoning request documents, the project will consist of four buildings, including one next to the Nathaniel Hawthorne Academy on the corner of East Dewey Place and North St. Mary Street, and two on either side of Polk Street.
The proposed development will have 70,000 square feet of commercial space.

He also told Express News that the size of the apartments has not yet been determined, but most of them will be rented out. Harris will consider selling some units. He is looking for a grocery store to be one of the commercial space tenants, but is also looking for restaurant tenants.
Patrick Christensen, an attorney for Harris Bay on the rezoning request, says the project is now dependent on approval of the 4.6-acre rezoning. He told Express-News that the plan is to keep the facades of the Texas Neon Advertising Co. building. at 245 W. Josephine and Art Deco buildings at 326 W. Josephine. The city council is expected to consider the request earlier this year.
