Can I use an expired COVID-19 home test?

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts (WWLP) — Many of us may keep extra home tests for COVID-19 in case we need them in the future, but what if the kit has expired?

According to the latest data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 49 of 52 jurisdictions (50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico) have counties at high or moderate risk of contracting COVID-19. Hawaii, Maine, and Wyoming are the only ones where all counties are low.

As the virus continues, health officials are asking people to check their COVID-19 testing kits.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a COVID-19 testing kit should not be used if it has expired because the parts and products used for the kits may fail over time, which could lead to to an invalid test result.

Several variants have been identified throughout the pandemic in the US and around the world, and locals say they remain concerned about the ever-changing virus.

“I’m definitely worried about that,” Southampton’s Lauren Hafnagel said. “In terms of immunosuppressed people, I’ve had it and I’m lucky I didn’t have dire consequences, but I’m worried about people who aren’t so lucky.”

Some COVID-19 home testing kits may have an extended expiration date on the label, so don’t throw them away just yet. More than a dozen of the 30 approved test kits have an extended shelf life.

To find out if your test kit has an extended expiration date, visit the FDA website.

Amid ongoing COVID cases, many people remain cautious even as they continue to live their lives.

“It’s definitely great to be back among the people,” said Worthington’s Kayleigh Watson. “You still have people in masks, and to each their own, but yes, it’s nice to be back to the usual things again.”
