Cheap wine tasting is not hard to find


As stand-up tasting bars were gradually replaced by sit-down, reservation-only establishments, prices tended to go up, but that still doesn’t mean Napa wine tasting should cost you a fortune.

However, if you are looking for free wine tastings, Napa is not for you. To do this, you’ll have to travel to nearby Sonoma County, where there are a few left – at least for now. If you prefer Napa, keep reading for the best wine tastings for $50 or less. We’ve sorted them by location in case you’re planning on visiting more than one winery a day.


Tank Garage Winery

Located in a former gas station, the aptly named “Lubricant Tasting” at the Tank Garage winery includes four limited-edition wines for $30. Reservation required.

Vineyards and cellars of Romeo

Enjoy a tasting flight of five wines (usually rosĂ©, a couple of reds, and two blends) for $30 per person at a restored 1800s carriage house that is now a tasting room for Romeo’s vineyards and cellars. Guests are welcome, if space permits.

Bennett Lane Winery

A tasting at Bennett Lane Winery includes a flight of four wines and a view of Napa’s Palisades Mountains for just $33 per person. Reservation required. Tastings are held in Spanish on request from Friday to Tuesday. Insider tip: The winery also has a charging station for electric vehicles.

Tedeschi Family Winery

A tasting at the Tedeschi Family Winery includes at least five servings of wine for $35. On request, a flight with red wine only is available. By appointment only, although same-day appointments are welcome.

Saint Helena

Vineyards of Rombauer

$25 – that’s right, $25! – will give you five wines at Rombauer Vineyards. The range usually includes two whites and three reds, but there is flexibility and a sixth fill is not uncommon. Reservation required.

Nickelini Family Winery

Founded in 1890, the Nickelini Family Winery is the oldest family owned winery in the Napa Valley. $30 gets you a sample of four current edition wines. Recommended appointments.

Winery V. Sattui

Choose from three inexpensive options at V. Sattui Winery, a popular venue run by one of Napa’s most controversial winemakers. “Premier Indoor Tasting” includes five Premier and Estate wines of your choice for $40; “Bubble Bar Tasting” includes four sparkling wines, served on the winery’s terrace overlooking the vineyards, for $45; and the Premier Outdoor Tasting will set you back $50 for a selection of five Premier and Estate wines from the same vineyard. Raymond Vineyards

The Crystal Cellar Wine Tasting at Raymond Vineyards includes four Cabernet Sauvignons bottled under sparkling Baccarat chandeliers for $50. The Taste of the Valley experience, which includes four small-scale wines, is available at or outside the main tasting room (weather permitting) for $40. Reservation required.

Spring Mountain Vineyard

Spring Mountain Vineyard has several tasting options. The most affordable of these is the Cottage Tasting, which costs $50 and includes four pours, including the winery’s flagship Bordeaux blend, Elivette. An experience that lasts a maximum of 45 minutes, by appointment only.

Association with the wine country

Home to a wine shop and tasting room, Wine Country Connection has somewhere around 70 wines on its tasting menu. You can try 2 ounces of any of these flavors for $10 per serving. The reserve tasting menu is a little cooler, featuring 2-ounce liqueurs that cost $20 or $30 a pop, depending on the wine. Did we mention Wine Country Connection also has draft beer? Walks are welcome; parties of six or more people are asked to call in advance.

Cellars of Jessup

It doesn’t get much easier than that. At Jessup Cellars, a flight of three wines costs $30; five wines – $50. (Exactly what you get will depend on which bottles are open on the day of your visit.) Invitations are accepted when space permits.

Hope and Grace Vines

The “Classic Wine Tasting” at Hope & Grace Wines Tasting Room costs $35 for five pours of limited production wines from one vineyard. For $50, you can add a cheese platter during the tasting. Reservation required. Call to check same day availability.

Keystone Taste, which costs $40 per person, is a flight of five wines showcasing current limited production wine releases. The Cornerstone Cellars tasting room requires an appointment.

Hestan Vineyards

At Hestan Vineyards Tasting Lounge, plan to spend an hour and $40 tasting current release wines, select offerings from their library and limited edition wines (most of which are only available locally). Reservation required.

Stuart Sellars

The $40 Portfolio Tasting at Stewart Cellars showcases current release wines; plan to spend 45 minutes to an hour. Advance booking is recommended, but entries are welcome.

For $50 at Chandon, you can get an “Adventure Flight” of four sparkling wines. Chandon also regularly offers seasonal tastings; check their tasting page for details. Reservation required.

Hill family estate

At the Yountville Hill Family Estate tasting room downtown, $50 will cover wine and cheese; pass on the cheese and it’s only 40 dollars. Both reservations and inputs are accepted.

JCB tasting room

Set aside an hour and $50 for a flight of vintage champagnes and sparkling wines at the JCB Tasting Lounge. Reservation required.

Winery Silver Trident

It’s hard to get past the $50 Potato Chip Extravaganza, which features five Silver Trident wines paired with five different potato chips. If you are not in a salty mood, you can opt for the Flight of Five tasting. It’s also $50. Reservation required.

Houseley Napa Valley

Try five wines for $25 at Housley Napa Valley. Enough said. Passes are welcome.

Rebellious vintners

For $30 you get six flavors: one white and one red from each of the three winemakers behind Rebel Vintners. In most cases you can skip the line, but call ahead to make sure there are spaces.

Compline liquor store

A stone’s throw from a sister restaurant of the same name, Compline’s $39 Wine Without Borders tasting showcases three sips from California and beyond. The liquor store champagne flight includes three champagne options for $49, or try the Napa and Vicinity Flight, which also has three wines for $49. Passes are welcome.

Team Alpha Omega

The $50 Signature Flight offers four wines from three brands: two from Alpha Omega in Napa, one from Tolosa in San Luis Obispo, and one from Perinet in Spain. Reservation required.
