City of Austin activates cold shelter Wednesday night

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The City of Austin will open its cold shelters on Wednesday night ahead of temperatures in the 30s.

Shelter check-in takes place between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm at the One Texas Center (OTC) at 505 Barton Springs Road.

Shelter activation thresholds in cold weather:

  • 32 degrees or colder at night
  • 35 degrees, with rain/wet
  • 35 degrees, with wind chill 32 or below

Activation notice:

  • Cold Weather Shelter Hotline Updated to Announce Activation – 512-305-ICEE (4233)
  • APH sends an email to the Community Communications Portal and to other outreach and information organizations for the vulnerable.
  • HSEM sends text to phone numbers registered in the notification system.
