Comedian Sam Morrill climbed from the roof to the Mirage

This episode of Kats Comedy Hut opens on the rooftops of New York and ends with theater on the Strip:

Top of the bill

We’ve heard of comedians looking for stage time to keep up and develop material. sam Morrill, Debuting at the Mirage Theater on Friday and Saturday, we’ve taken this concept one step further… And several steps higher.

During the pandemic, Morril performed when there were no open clubs, on the rooftops of New York City apartment buildings for six weeks. It culminated in a special episode of “Up On The Roof” posted on Morrill’s YouTube page in November 2020. The 45-minute clip of highlights from these shows has received over 2 million views.

“It was good for me. It probably saved me mentally in some cases,” says Morrill, who often climbed stairs illegally for these pop-ups. You made something out of nothing. All I really need is a microphone, right? It really doesn’t take much to do that.”

Morril held official shows in temporary halls (in tents and other places) in search of stage time.

“I performed in places that were not made for comedy,” he says. “It’s funny when you start out as a brand new comedian, you’re willing to do anything for stage time. COVID brought it back. The time of the stage has become finite. So in the end I thought, “Hey, find a rud and an amplifier, get some beer and wine and friends, and I’ll come.”

Mirage Theater is Morrill’s first major striptease commission. He didn’t appreciate the venue’s notoriety until he mentioned his appearances with longtime booker Comedy Cellar. Esty Adoram.

“I didn’t realize how important it was until I talked to Esty and when I told her I was playing Mirage she was like, ‘Wow’ and the way she looked at me was something like: maybe it’s a big deal (laughs),” says Morrill. “She says, ‘Ray Romano is playing here,’ and I say, ‘Oooh, okay, okay.’ I just don’t know Vegas rooms.

Morril co-hosts the Games With Names podcast with former Patriots wide receiver. Julian Edelman. The comedian says the show needed someone who could be reliable funny but also knew a thing or two about the sport. The guests were such prominent sports figures as Eli Manning, Tedy Bruschi, Peyton Manning, Paul Pierce and Michael irvine. And Morrill’s latest comedy, Same Time Tomorrow, is streaming on Netflix.

For Morrill, fighting the pandemic was a humiliating exercise.

“My career has been in the closet for so long, but I’ve come a long way over the past many, many years,” the comedian said. “It was very humiliating to go back again. It’s a reminder that this show could end at any moment and you really need to seize the moment.”

Jon Lovitz a character in his SNL days was the fantastically unknowing Tommy Flanagan, president of Pathological Liars Anonymous.

The new snippet sparked a social media spat between Lovitz and the real Santos, who chided the veteran comedian as well as the drag queen. Trixie Mattel, another performer with a performance by Santos.

“Jon Lovitz is considered one of the greatest comedians of all time, and it was embarrassing – for him, not for me!” Santos wrote. “These comedians need to step up their game.”

Lovitz retorted: “Thanks for the feedback and advice! You’re right. I need to improve my game! My pathological liar is no match for you!

Laugh Factory partner and CEO Harry Basil says he’s still unsure if Lovitz’s character will premiere in Vegas. Basil, whose stage persona is Superman, says, “I’ll bring my Clark Kent glasses just in case.”
