McAllen, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas on Sunday suggested that President Joe Biden visit other border cities if he is serious about addressing border security.
Cruz’s announcement came ahead of Biden’s scheduled visit to El Paso on Sunday.
“Finally, after 5.3 million illegal crossings of foreigners, of which more than a million have fled, President Biden visits the border,” Cruz said. “If President Biden is serious about resolving the crisis created by his administration, he needs to visit McAllen, Eagle Pass, Del Rio and Laredo and talk to residents ravaged by crime, ranchers who find bodies on their land, to the Border Patrol. who are overwhelmed and families who have lost loved ones due to the cross-border drug trade.”
On Thursday, the White House provided details of Biden’s plans for a trip to El Paso.
“The President will assess border security operations and meet with local elected officials and community leaders who have been important partners in managing the historic numbers of migrants fleeing political oppression and gang violence in Venezuela, Haiti, Nicaragua and Cuba,” the White House said. in an email application.
In announcing his plans to visit El Paso, Biden expressed dissatisfaction with Republicans for not working with Democrats to push through immigration and border security reforms or funding his plan to fix the southwestern border with Mexico.
“[Congressional] The Republicans refused to consider my comprehensive plan,” Biden said on Thursday. “And they turned down my recent request for an additional $3.5 billion for border security and funds for 2,000 new asylum officers, one more asylum officers and staff, and 100 new immigration judges so people don’t have to wait years so that their requirements are considered. which they are entitled to make claims legally.
“And the failure to adopt and fund this comprehensive plan has exacerbated the problems we are seeing on our southwestern frontier.”
