GEORGETOWN, TX (KXAN) — Demolition of the Williams Drive Bridge over Interstate 35 has begun. A major highway will be closed overnight this weekend as construction crews destroy a lane on the bridge.
The Texas Department of Transportation said the north and south lanes of I-35 will be closed from Lakeway Drive to State Route 29 from 9 pm to 9 am this Friday and Saturday, and will repeat again next weekend.
Residents of Georgetown say that this intersection is one of the busiest places in the city.
Cameo McGraw owns Urban Cottage on the west side of Williams Drive. Traffic has become more difficult over the past year and a half, she said.
She said the backups had an impact on her business—almost every day she hears dissatisfied customers waiting in traffic.
Despite the current frustration, McGraw said she hopes continued construction on city roads will improve traffic flow.
“We are very upset about this, but we know that when everything is done, it will be more beneficial for all of us because it will make it easier,” McGraw said.
