Dozens of Trees to be Added to Cemetery at Austin Memorial Park Due to MoPac Noise Glitches

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority announced Wednesday that work will begin next week on its MoPac Cemetery tree planting project after several years of inactivity. The project aims to minimize noise and visual disturbances near the cemetery in Austin Memorial Park.

CTRMA board members discussed the issue at a board meeting on Wednesday morning. The project will add about 55 trees as a barrier separating the cemetery from the highway and install an irrigation system.

In October 2021, KXAN investigators reported that the regional toll road authority would spend $1 million on improvements. Under federal law, the cemetery was supposed to be protected by a strong wall during construction of the toll lanes as part of the 2012 MoPac Improvement Project, but this never happened.

Construction is expected to be completed this spring.
