If the border always looked like it did during President Joe Biden’s visit, he wouldn’t need to make the trip.
On Sunday, President Joe Biden visited the US-Mexico border for the first time since taking office. It was a hint of political reality. The border crisis is not abating. Since taking office, US Customs and Border Protection reports that there have been more than 4 million encounters with potential illegal immigrants along the border. Last year, that number was almost 2.4 million. For context, there were more fears in 2022 than during the entire presidency of Donald Trump.
Biden’s border policy is not working. But he would have been hard-pressed to find evidence of this during his recent visit to El Paso. Before his arrival, the authorities cleared the tent cities of migrants and sent some of the migrants back to Mexico.
“People say that if you find yourself on the street, the border guards will grab you and deport you because the president is coming to El Paso and they don’t want to show him the reality of things,” Maria Rodriguez, 23-year-old woman. a year old child from Venezuela, according to the New York Post.
As it turns out, the Biden administration knows how to secure the border. Oh irony.
This was not the only moment of blissful ignorance. He visited the port of entry and the El Paso County Migrant Service Center, but officials kept the illegal immigrants out of sight. Biden’s incoherent border policies were such a disaster that he could not be seen standing up to the chaos he caused.
This visit was clearly a political ploy. Biden is considering re-election. The border crisis is really a weak spot. Even Democratic officials now complain about the burden of providing services to illegal immigrants. The public generally disapproves of Biden’s actions on this issue as well.
Biden is facing a problem that he himself created. He ran the 2020 campaign criticizing Trump’s approach. But his plans were so bad that he was forced to resort to Trump’s policies. He upheld Section 42, which expels migrants on public health grounds, in place for more than a year before announcing he was ending it. The decision was so reckless that some Democrats on the campaign trail, including Nevada Senator Katherine Cortez Masto, criticized it. It has not entered into force, as the litigation is dragging on.
Then last week, Biden extended the use of Section 42 to all Nicaraguan, Cuban, and Haitian immigrants who exceed the 30,000 monthly admission limit. At the same time, he is afraid of offending the left wing of his party, which wants open borders.
It’s nice that Biden visited the border. Now it’s time to stop the record number of illegal crossings.
