Family of man shot dead by Liberty Hill police hires lawyer in search of answers

LIBERTY HILL, TX (KXAN) — The family of 21-year-old Jackson Lieber, who was shot dead by a Liberty Hill police officer last week, has hired a lawyer as they call for more transparency in the investigation.

“We are talking about a 21-year-old young man who was a high school graduate and never got into trouble,” said Robert Ranko, a lawyer representing the Lieber family.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said Lieber had an accident at 1869 Ranch Road, wandered onto private property, and got into a fight with people who live there. The soldiers said that Lieber then got into a fight with a Liberty Hill police officer, who responded but did not say if Lieber had a weapon.

“This is currently unknown,” the sergeant said. Deon Cockrell with DPS. “I know that there was a small quarrel – or something like a quarrel – between the unsub and the officer.”

The Liberty Hill Police Department said the officer who shot Lieber, Esteban Gomez-Sanchez, was placed on administrative leave in accordance with department protocol. He joined Liberty Hill in December 2020.

Since the night of the shooting, we’ve been asking Liberty Hill about the rules for using body cameras, and if there’s been a similar deadly police shooting in the city before. The chief did not answer those specific questions.

“What immediate threat posed by Jackson could justify the use of lethal force against him at the time?” Ranko said. “We haven’t received any meaningful information from anyone involved in the situation.”

On Tuesday, the DPS said it did not have an update on the investigation. The case was taken over by the Texas Rangers and the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.

Ranko works for DC Law. The firm advertises on KXAN.
