Fire, smoke, damage at the center of events at the Southeast Side Church

SAN ANTONIO — Arson investigators are trying to find the cause of the fire on Friday morning, which caused heavy smoke to spread throughout an event center owned by a church on the southeast side.

The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of Ada Street, on property owned by St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.

San Antonio firefighters discovered thick smoke coming from the vents of Gewers Hall, a church events center.

The battalion commander told KSAT 12 News that it was initially difficult for the brigades to find the source of the fire because of the smoke in the area.

They eventually discovered the fire in a pantry at the back of the building.

He said the room contained camping gear from a local Boy Scout troop.

According to firefighters, the room was locked and there was no sign of anyone tampering with it or starting a fire.

They say they called arson investigators because they couldn’t figure out what caused the fire.

No harm done.

The building was really badly damaged by smoke.

According to the church’s website, Gewers Hall was built over 50 years ago, in 1970.
