As Dallas Cowboys kicker Brett Maher once again struggled in yet another playoff game, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott took to Twitter to troll Cowboys fans. On Sunday night, January 22, Abbott criticized the struggling kicker with a tweet that read, “I swear I can hit as good as a Dallas Cowboys kicker.”

The tweet was highly derisive, given that Abbott had to use a wheelchair after a 1984 accident when a storm-weakened tree fell on him and damaged his spine, paralyzing him. Abbott was referring to Maher missing another extra-point hit — after missing four a week earlier — in the NFC Cowboys’ divisional round game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night. The Cowboys lost 19-12.

Cowboys fans (and people who aren’t Abbott fans) didn’t have it on Twitter. The responses poured in immediately, and they were quite caustic.

The top response was from San Antonio’s BOXING n BBQ account, who responded, “In the winter, you can’t even hit the switch for us.”

Phew. The post was about the 2021 winter storm, when high demand on the forgotten Texas power grid led to constant power outages, leaving thousands without power in freezing weather.

Other responses commented on Abbott’s time as governor as he enters his third term after being re-elected last year.

Abbott received some support for his tweet, mostly from GOP frontmen such as former National Rifle Association spokesperson Dana Lesh.
