Houston Public Housing Waiting List Reopens, But What’s New?

The HHA stated that there is currently no limit on the number of people who can apply.

HOUSTON. On Sunday, Houston residents will get their first chance to be on the public housing waitlist in nearly five years, and the Houston Housing Authority is making big changes.

The HHA stated that there is currently no limit on the number of people who can apply.

As Houston becomes more crowded, new homes continue to rise, as do prices and the need for affordable apartments.

“Local affairs are getting worse,” said Rice University sociology assistant professor Anna Rhodes.

Rhodes said this has been especially true since the beginning of the pandemic.

Kinder Institute’s 2022 State of Housing Report shows higher material and labor costs and fewer building permits for multi-family buildings.

“We are at the point where we need to try to take proactive steps to address the issue,” Rhodes said.

The Houston Housing Authority is preparing to open its doors to new tenants at the Museum District public housing development, as well as nine others across the city.

The public housing waiting list in Houston opens at noon on Sunday and closes on February 15th.

All eligible low-income families, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities can apply online or in person at one of the HHA offices.

This time, you will be able to apply for multiple properties with a single application. It will also appear in several new languages.

Waiting list selection will be done randomly by the computer so that everyone has an equal chance of being selected, no matter when they apply.

KHOU 11 requested an interview with the president of the Houston Housing Authority, but was told he was unavailable. His team said they expect many people to apply, but they’re not sure how many.

HHA officials add that there is no clear timeline for people on the waiting list to be placed in housing. They said this is because it depends on a number of factors, including the availability of the device.
