It’s the poorest city in Texas

The US Census Bureau released in December the latest five-year estimates from the American Community Survey, the current nationwide demographic survey that gathers the social, economic and housing characteristics of millions of households each year.

According to the latest data, the typical American household earned an average of $69,021 in the five years ending 2021. While this latest figure represents a modest 6% increase over estimates for the five-year period ending in 2020, for most Americans, any income growth has been wiped out by rising inflation.

Although the CPI fell after the June 2022 funds to cover rising costs.

The typical family in Texas earns $67,321 a year, according to the latest five-year ACS data, although there are many places in the state where incomes are much lower. Of the 877 cities in the state for which data is available, Carrizo Hill ranks as the poorest. The typical Carrizo Hill family earns only $9,110 a year, which is 86.5% less than the state median household income.

Almost all residents of Carrizo Hill live below the poverty line. The local poverty rate in the city is a staggering 96.9% compared to the state poverty rate of 14.0%.

All data in this story are five-year estimates from the 2021 American Community Survey by the US Census Bureau. For the purposes of this history, cities are defined as registered legal entities or census-defined statistical areas with a population between 1,000 and 25,000. Cities were excluded if the median household income was not available in ACS 2021 or if the sampling error associated with the city data was considered too high.
