REPUBLIC, MI — Lila J. Maze, 96, of The Republic, died Sunday, January 22, 2023. She was surrounded by her loving daughters and was cared for by Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice and Teal Lake Assisted Living staff. .
She was born in Humboldt, Michigan to the late Victor and Maria (Plukka) Mustamaa and has lived in the area for most of her life.
Leila was “Rosie the Riveter” who worked as an operator at the Briggs Manufacturing plant in Detroit during World War II. She then earned her high school diploma from Hazel Park High School in Hazel Park, Michigan.
She worked as a long-distance operator for the Michigan Bell Company, where she received awards for her distinguished service to servicemen and women during the war. She also worked as a sales clerk at Montgomery Wards in Warren, Michigan, JL Hudsons in Troy, Michigan where she received recognition for her services, and Hagelstein Bakery in Royal Oak, Michigan.
Leila was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in the Republic. She was an excellent seamstress, she also enjoyed crocheting, needlework, travelling, and cooking gourmet meals. Her family will remember her as someone who was always ready to help anyone in need if she could without hesitation.
She is survived by her children: Dana (Sharon) Maze of Sterling Heights, Michigan, Rhonda (Thomas) Casselman of Negoni, Laura Maze of Republic, and Don Maze of Marquette; 5 grandchildren, Danny (Lisa) Maze, Wendy (Dan) McAllister, Andrew Henderson Jr., Troy (Sarah) Henderson and Kara Stahl; 10 great grandchildren; and friend Irene Harwala from Marquette.
She preceded in the death of her parents; husband Lawrence Maze; siblings, Eileen Aho, Laurie, Eino, Elmer, John (Victor), Carl, Arnold, and George, and half-sisters and brothers.
A celebration of Laila’s life will take place in the spring/summer and will be announced.
